edited November 2010 in Philosophy
Is there a complete translation of the Avatamsaka Sutra to be found online anywhere? Thank you.

    Hi, GeminiVI,

I think this is complete, arranged as a series of HTML pages: http://www.buddhistbooks.info/avatam/index.html

If you find any insights, I would love to hear them! I thought about reading it, but now realise I am far too new to Buddhism to tackle it yet.

This doesn't appear to be a full version of the text. All I see are commentaries of each chapter and interpretation by Hsuan Hua. Did I miss something?

As for the sutra, I went and purchased the Thomas Cleary book, a hefty 1600 page tome and have only read a little (most the Sutra of the Ten Stages/Grounds as a reference to something I wanted to look up). It's quite an invovled sutra, though I once heard from a monk online that it can be read in 3-4 weeks with dedication. Of course, the lay life is "dusty" and has a way of keeping one busy. :)

Ah, this one looks good. I once had a link to a full version online of the Thomas Cleary translation but that appears to be gone now. It's nice to see other translations online exist, even if some chapters are missing. As stated above, the one chapter I have (almost) read was the 26th chapter on the Ten Stages, that was very informative as to the different stages of the Bodhisattva path. On the book I had, it was 80-pages long, so the Sutra is quite a difficult one to read.

This old translation by Cleary is now available:

    Hello All,

I own the Thomas Cleary book and have studied it in depth, reading it cover to cover 3 times.
This book is a must, there is so much that can be understood by the novice, and so little that is hard to understand.
If we all lived according to this book, our world would be a place of heavenly beings.
I recommend this as an imperative book, for all humanity to read!
Better to buy a copy you can hold in your own hands, than to try to read this online!
Remember that undermining copyright is also an act that creates negative karma, and anyone interested in Buddhism would not knowingly choose to create negative karma.....

I came across this website recently that presents book 30 of the Avatamsaka in a discussion of the REALLY BIG NUMBERS invented by Buddhism.

Novaloka blew my mind. Truly fascinating.
