It's "om mani padme hum", the mantra of Avalokiteshvara. (Chenrezig in Tibetan.) The text is a little bit stylized.

That's one of the most beautiful tats I've ever seen in my life.

It looks more like a stick-on one than the real thing !

By the way the skin is raised I think it's just been done.
I like the look of tattoos in foreign text, but I sometimes wonder if tattooists in English speaking countries get it right. I mean, it could say anything  and I saw one once that I'd swear was upside down.

I recommend Visible Mantra as a source for Tibetan and Sanskrit script for mantras, bijas etc.

There are many stories about tattoos meaning something obscene instead of what you wanted, but I think most are apocryphal and relate to tales of the drunken silliness of Europeans in Asian countries. Tattoo artists I know don't like to do tatts like that, or names of lovers. Removal can be painful and ugly and a cover-up tattoo may be tricky.

Google searches for images sometimes throw up some good ideas as well. ;)

A lot of the mantras on that site are misspelled in Tibetan, Yeshe. Badly.

I have that wrote on my backpack. Would like to get a sew-on patch of it, since the supposedly permanent marker I used isn't so permanent. But then, I suppose it could be used as an example of impermanence or something.

But if I ever got a tattoo, that would be it.
