edited January 2010 in Buddhism Basics
I live in North Dakota on the border of Minnesota (Fargo/Moorhead, in case anyone is familiar with the area). I found a small group in the area that meets once a week to meditate, but I'm very tentative about joining. I currently have no teacher, so I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for reading. I'm not quite sure what sect of Buddhism I'd like to be a part of, but I'm beginning to lean towards Zen--I'm still very open to learn about other teachings though.

    You can find A LOT of free information online.

    http://www.accesstoinsight.org/ - Theravada readings, a lot of sutra translations

    http://www.what-buddha-taught.net/ - Another load of (mostly) Theravada teachings

    On the Zen side I don't know :{

    Concerning the tibetan schools you will find some really good dharma talks as freebies. Everything by Ven, Robina Courtin. Try http://www.lamrim.com

    I liked some dharma talks from http://www.freebuddhistaudio.com/ I would double check things you learn from here though :S

    Beginner's Mind and Not Always So by Shunryu Suzuki... Doing Nothing Going Nowhere by Thich Nhat Hanh (or anything else by him).

    I also like Charlotte Joko-Beck's Everyday Zen: Love and Work. It brings Zen down to the "kitchen sink level."

    My brother lives in Grand Forks. Too bad he isn't a Buddhist.

    My favorite stuff is by Thick Nhat Hanh.
