I think it's beautiful;

The World A Village

If one compares the world to a village of 100 inhabitants, taking into account all existing nations, this village would exist of:
- 57 Asians
- 21 Europeans
- 14 Americans
- 8 Africans

- 52 women
- 48 men
- 70 non-whites
- 30 whites
- 70 non-christians
- 30 christians
- 89 heterosexuals
- 11 gay men

- 6 people with 59% of all wealth in the world
- 6 people with USA nationality
- 80 people would be homeless
- 70 people would be illiterate
- 50 people would depend on someone else
- 1 person would die
- 2 babies would be born

If you woke up this morning not being seriously ill, then you are luckier than 1 million people who will die in the coming days.

If you never experienced war,
never were wounded in a war,
never went hungry,
then you are luckier than 500 million people in the world.

If you can go to a church of some kind without feeling threatened,
without being arrested,
or without being killed,
then you are luckier than 3 billion people in the world.

If you have food in the fridge,
have enough clothes,
have a roof over your head,
and a bed,
then you are richer than 75% of the world population.

If you have a bank account,
or some money in your wallet,
or some change in your pocket,
then you belong to the 8% of the richest people in the world.

If you can read this, then you are doubly blessed, because:
- someone thought about you
- you do not belong to the 2 billion people that can not read
- and .... you have a pc.

Once somebody said:
love - like nobody has ever hurt you
dance - like nobody is watching
sing - as if nobody is listening
work - for the benefit of all beings

3% have internet connection according to that film. Not so much a wired world, but a wired wealthy elite.

How do we help those 93%, our mothers, find an end to their suffering?

How can we moan and complain about stuff when we're sooo privileged?

What an opportunity we have to communicate, around the world!!, to learn ways to skillfully help others!!!!

    We can do this!!!

Wow. This makes me SO grateful for everything that I have. I think I am going to try and make it a point to read this everyday. Truly beautiful. I'm very happy that I decided to read this :) It's truly amazing isn't it? How can I complain about not getting enough hours at work when I am still so much wealthier than much of the world? Thank you so much for posting this!!!!!! :):):)

It's been a while since anyone has posted, but seriously, 80% of the world is homeless? Isn't that a tad exaggerated?

Don't get me wrong, it's a pretty eye opening thingy. It's just that bit that made my left eyebrow involuntarily raise...

There are 11 gay men and 0 lesbians in the world????? Ummm, no.
  • edited February 2010
Wow. It's unfortunate how easy it is to forget about the rest of the world...
  • edited February 2010
I've seen this before and was struck by it. Nice to revisit the reality.

Yeah, a think it is a bit exaggerated. On my other forum apparently woman in really poor countries are like property and don't even have a chance for an afair. Although if your speaking like that I don't think one in ten people are openly gay... My dad said it's innacurate because of all the computers and stuff owned by buisnesses as a whole and it gets quite complicated. Maybe they just exaggerate it to get more people donating money to people in poverty... At least the lying isn't a bad cause, and it isn't exactly lying...
I'm not 'supposed' to learn about all poverty, modern issues ext. for another 2-4 years but the sooner you know about the world the better is what I suddenly just said and what I probably think along the lines of...

That was awe-inspiring Love. so many people whine without realizing how blessed they truly are. I had just typed a message on another thread about how I've always been happy. your insight above made me realize that part of that happiness also was/is because i have also been able to see myself as that fortunate one...while so many others go without. when i feel bad for a moment about something that didn't go the way i expected...or wanted...I look around me and see the homeless, or the man in a wheelchair who cannot use his legs...and my smile of sheer gratefulness returns...along with my humanity, humility and soul...not frought with want for myself, but for the others around me who deserve it so much more than I do :)

remember though that gaydom is a highly repressed activity in a lot of societies.

Well, they included them in heterosexuals because no one thinks they really exist anyway! (see Lady Gaga posts)

But please understand it's hard when there's so many homophobes around you to cut out the 'they', my dad wants me to be a homophobe anyway I thought so I've been disobediant  Actually I found out he isn't that racist or homophobic after all, he just like winding me up
