A great but arguementable quote i heard from a zen monk today

edited February 2010 in Buddhism Basics
I was at a zen temple and after our meditation cycles, the monk gives us a talk and he was going on about the path of awakening and he said at one of the beginning stages, one must rid of the egotism (which everyone knows) but then he said something Ive never heard before..he said:

"To rid oneself of egotism, one must first attain egotism"

when i talked to him after the service, he explained it further to me in a more modern way, he said a lot of people have trouble trying to remove the ego in the path to enlightenment because lots are insecure about aspects of there life or physical appearance, so to be able to easily remove egotism, you must make a goal to do the things in your life to not be self conscious and insecure which then leads to not caring what people think about you.

I think this is a great quote, any thoughts???
