edited February 2010 in Buddhism Basics

Refer to this website for "The Thirty-one Planes of Existence"

Okay, I offered a direct response. It's apparently not understandable to you right now. So, I'll offer you some (blah blah blah) details.

'amitoufo' is a Chinese blessing I imagine can be rendered as, "May the Amitabha
Buddha Bless You.' It's not the name of a Buddha. The first dead give-away.

Second, the pure land of the Amitabha Buddha is part of Mandala teachings and mandala are representations of states of consciousness and the order of the universe, which is also based on human sentience.

There is no place -OUT THERE - where the Amitabha Pure Land 'is.' It is, in fact, a state of mind one may 'go' to through the purification of their mind in association with the Buddha Amitabha.

It's kinda like - "being like Mike" being like the Amitabha Buddha. The Amitabha Buddha, their qualities and characteristics are objects of investigation, analysis, and understanding through refined concentration and then objects of meditation in order to habituate and begin to embody those traits. This may lead you to the pure land (state of being).

    Get It!?!

The Pure Land is Here and Now!! Just cuz we can't know it due to obstructing defilements doesn't mean it's not here.

The pure land is here and now ,
Scholars points to the earlier days just before the Christian era, inorder to convert the people in eastern Persian area who attached to their native religion ( sun god , infinite light ) about going to heaven after one's death , such type of provisional Mahayana teaching was introduced, and such teaching proven to comfort those who live in the continue unrest areas and the lesser educated ..

And Tientai scholar monks used to point to that the key of this practice derived from the Mahayana Vimalakirti sutra, there are many level of pure land practice , and the highest form is chanting to realise the true aspect of the Reality.

" The Vimalakirti Sutra states that, when one seeks the Buddhas’ emancipation in the minds of ordinary beings, one finds that ordinary beings are the entities of enlightenment, and that the sufferings of birth and death are nirvana. It also states that, if the minds of living beings are impure, their land is also impure, but if their minds are pure, so is their land. There are not two lands, pure or impure in themselves. The difference lies solely in the good or evil of our minds."

" It is the same with a Buddha and an ordinary being. When deluded, one is called an ordinary being, but when enlightened, one is called a Buddha " ( WND pg4 )

I've read another point of view, where pure land means a place when all conditions are favorable and conducive to practice. "Buddha-fields are filled with arya bodhisattvas, those bodhisattvas who have had nonconceptual cognition of voidness, and there they are taught by Sambhogakaya forms of Buddhas, physical forms that Buddhas manifest in that make full use of the Mahayana teachings". Tushita (Tosotsuten) would be a pure land.

But I guess this is from another branch of Buddhism :P

Could this also refer to a state of mind in which one is ready and able to receive the instruction and guidance of Sambhogakaya Buddhas?

P.S. I imagine Nirmanakaya as physical forms and Sambhogakaya as subtle forms. I also imagine being taught that all these forms are called forth (invoked) by the wish of (oops - higher) sentient beings.

    '

It is my understanding that the "Pure Land" is one's state of mind at a certain level of practice.

    Kind regards,
