looking for direction

edited February 2010 in Buddhism Basics
Hi everyone my names Harlie

I'm new to the site and fairly new to Buddhism, I've only read a little of the great treatise on the stages to the path to enlightenment and the lamp to the path to enlightenment.

Is there anything anyone would suggest to do, read, or anything else to help me on the path to enlightenment?

Thanks

    Hi Harlie

Check out the 4 Noble Truths and the Noble 8-fold Middlepath.

By Keeping Things Simple you can actively support yourself in regards to your goal.

    With metta.

    Hi Harlie and welcome !

I suggest you read 'What the Buddha Taught' by Walpola Rahula and that you investigate the core teachings of the Buddha in the Pali Canon.

You can find lots of information and many suttas on this website.

    Kind regards,

The Heart of The Buddha's Teaching by Thich Nhat Hanh (He is a Zen master but this book is about concepts common to everybody)

Every Dharma talk you can find on internet by Tenzin Palmo and Venerable Robina Courtin
Is there anything anyone would suggest to do, read, or anything else to help me on the path to enlightenment?

If you are delving into Tibetan Buddhism I suggest you take a look at Berzin Archives website and also Thubten Chodron's. Both sites have a LOT of information on Lam Rim. (Thubten Chodron even has a CD with Guided LamRim Meditations).

I think it would help if you start doing shamatha practice for a few minutes each day. Some instruction is here, in case you've never done it. And it would help if you looked for a group in your area to practice with.

For the pali canon go to accesstoinsight.org > tipitaka (another name for the pali canon) > sutta pitaka. I would suggest the majjhima nikaya to start.

I vote with thecap. Try not to get too befuddled with the endless speculations and discussions that can trap a Buddhist student. The aim for a Buddhist practitioner is peace, joy, the cessation of suffering. It is for this reason that the Buddha taught, and it is for this reason that we practice. The Four Noble Truths, your life, has already everything you need to help you on this path now. If it is your interest.

    Blessings,

    Abu
