What Job Should I Get?

I was a PhD student in a biology related field. I decided my time and energy would be better spent curing self delusion.

Other then having more time/energy for Buddhist practice, are there any guidelines you would suggest for choosing a job that might be more supportive/less obstructive of the Buddhist path?

Avoid a job that involves killing, cheating, stealing, hurting, and being cruel. Other than that I think work is work. Find something you like, are good at, and makes the amount of money you want to live the life you strive for. One can be happy being a street sweeper.

What about finding a job that faces me with my weaknesses?

Or simply do something caring like being a nurse, or volunteering at an animal shelter (a no-kill shelter please!), or delivering meals on wheels. As long as you're not managing a slaughter house for a living, I'd say doing something that helps to relieve the suffering of others would be a step in the right direction. I don't see how, unless you're independently wealthy, you're going to be able to find a job that will allow you to devote more time to your practice than to the job. Unfortunately our society isn't set up that way. Unless of course you renounce all your worldly possessions (and debts) and become a monk or something..
