Guided meditation

edited September 2010 in Buddhism Basics
Is guided meditation ok? Or is it better on your own. If it helps for mindfulness, could you recommend any?

And a really beginner question, is it ok to swallow during meditation, or is it considered a movement))

Thank you

For the swallowing I think as long as your mindful of the action it should be fine. Along with that, if it happens, don't get caught up with "oh man, I need to not swallow and be mindful". Just acknowlege "I am swallowing" then guide yourself back to your breath(or whatever your object of focus).

I'm guessing that by guided meditation you mean a group of meditators being lead by a teacher.

Being guided along a certain way is beneficial. A guided meditation focused on anger is very good at eliciting just where that anger has its origins.

But you must be led by a skilled teacher.
And a really beginner question, is it ok to swallow during meditation, or is it considered a movement

If you rest your tongue slightly upwards pushing gently against your front teeth you will find this slows down the saliva flow which induces you to swallow.

My teacher (a Tibetan Buddhist monk since age 12) teaches that the purpose of meditation is training the mind. He thinks that all external stimuli should be disregarded, and that you should aim at training your focus to the point that you are able to ignore external stimuli.

I have no idea how to combine that with sometime externally guiding my meditation.

Guided meditation is a particular type of meditation designed to confront the meditator with a particular issue and to trace that issue though to its conclusion.

What you have described is single pointed meditation concentration on the mind only. You cannot logically combine the two.

    Hi Ianaav,

Meditation is best learned from a live person, a teacher who has experience. This way, you can corroborate your experiences with him/her. You will also speed up your learning process by avoiding all sorts of side-tracks and there will be no need to experiment. A real teacher can also prevent any possible big mistakes and give you protection from any spiritual entities that may trouble one.

I think if you want to start practising on your own. Meditation with the breath is very useful. But do many very short sessions like maybe 10-15mins at most
