What is the Equanimity Link to Awakening?
Even evaluation is characteristic of the Equanimity Link to Awakening.
(Upekkha-Sambojjhanga). Preventing both deficiency & excess and
securing impartiality is the function of Equanimity. Imperturbable
ballance is the manifestation of the Equanimity Link to Awakening.
Equanimity just looks on whenever new phenomena arises and ceases.
This stable yet plastic patience purifies all the other advantageous
mental states, which reach maximum, when joined with Equanimity...
Equanimity (Upekkha) is a moderating mental construction.
Equanimity is also a mood of neither gladness nor sadness.
Equanimity is also a feeling of neither pain nor pleasure.
Equanimity is also the neutral ability to be indifferent.
Equanimity is also the 4th infinitely divine dwelling.
Equanimity is also a quite high form of happiness.
Equanimity is also a refined mental purification.
Equanimity is therefore a Link to Enlightenment...
There is Equanimity both regarding live beings and dead things.
There is Equanimity both regarding all internal & external states.
There is Equanimity both regarding all past, present and future.
There is Equanimity both regarding all mentality & all materiality.
The Buddha once said: What mental fermentations (asava) should be
overcome by development? If a Bhikkhu by alert & rational attention
develops the Equanimity Link to Awakening based on seclusion, based
on disillusion, on ceasing, culminating in full renouncing relinquishment,
then neither can mental fermentation, nor any fever, nor discontent
ever arise in him. MN2 [i 11]
When mind is concentrated one can observe all closely in equanimity.
The Equanimity Link to Awakening arises right there. He develops it,
and for him repeatedly meditating it goes gradually to the completion
of its development. MN118 [iii 85]

Feeding the Serene Equanimity!
The Blessed Buddha once said:
Bhikkhus, just as this body, is sustained by feeding, exists in dependence on
feeding and cannot survive without food, so are the 7 Links to Awakening
also sustained by feeding, they can also only exist in dependence on feeding
and they cannot remain without feeding... And what, bhikkhus, is the feeding
of the emergence of any yet unarisen equanimity and also feeding of the
completion by condensation of any arisen Equanimity?
There are states that are the basis & source Equanimity! Frequently pointing
careful and rational attention to them, is feeding the emergence of unarisen
equanimity & also feeding of the gradual fulfillment of any arisen Equanimity
Link to Awakening... And what, Bhikkhus, is the starving that obstructs all
emergence of a yet unarisen equanimity and which also hinders any already
arisen Equanimity Link from reaching complete fulfillment by development?
There are states that are the basis and source for the equanimity!
Not giving frequent, careful and rational attention to them; not considering
them much and often; is the starving that prevents an unarisen equanimity
from arising and also blocks any already arisen equanimity from reaching
any complete fulfillment through training in the form of frequent meditation!
Comments from the classical commentaries:
Imperturbable onlooking ballance is characteristic of the equanimity.
(Upekkha-Sambojjhanga). Moderation, seeking the neutral middle, composure
and control is the purpose of the quality of Equanimity (Upekkha).
Imperturbability is the manifestation of the equanimity. This stable yet still
plastic patience purifies all the other advantageous mental states, which thus
reach their maximum, when joined with Equanimity...
Further conditions helpful for the emergence of the equanimity are:
1: Impartiality regarding all living & sentient beings...
2: Indifference regarding all inanimate constructions...
3: Avoiding biased people who prefer favouritism & one-sided partiality...
4: Friendship with well ballanced people unmoved by both pleasure & pain...
5: Commitment to ballance the mind into even & imperturbable Equanimity!
There is Equanimity towards living beings and regarding material things!
There is Equanimity towards internal states & regarding external states!
There is Equanimity towards all past, present, and future times, and events!
There is Equanimity towards all mentality and regarding all materiality!

The 7 Links to Awakening produce Final Enlightenment...
There are these 7 links leading to final Enlightenment...
1: Awareness is a link to Awakening.
2: Investigation of the states is a link to Awakening.
3: Energy is a link to Awakening.
4: Joy is a link to Awakening.
5: Tranquillity is a link to Awakening.
6: Concentration is a link to Awakening.
7: Equanimity is a link to Awakening.
They lead to and induce enlightenment! Thus are they links to awakening:
They are themselves enlightened, in this way are they links to awakening.
They are enlightened, since they embrace the root cause of awakening.
They are enlightened, since they provide & equip the cause of awakening.
They are enlightened, since they induce ripening of the cause of awakening.
They are enlightened, since they enhance the root cause of awakening.
They are enlightened, since they completely perfect the cause of awakening.
How do the 7 Links to Awakening remain established and anchored in mind?
The Awareness link remains by no attention being given to other states.
The Awareness link remains by the sign of being directed to continuously.
The Awareness link remains by the sign-less state being given attention.
The Awareness link remains by no attention given to mental construction.
The Awareness link remains by attention being given to ceasing of craving.
The Awareness link to Awakening indeed remains fixed & anchored in mind
in these 5 ways. Exactly & similarly so with the other 6 links to Awakening.

Final Release is Fulfilled by True Wisdom!
Once in Savatthi the Blessed Buddha said this:
How, Ananda, are the Seven Links to Awakening trained and developed
so that they fulfill True Wisdom and Final Release?
When a Bhikkhu, Ananda, develops the Awareness Link to Awakening,
based upon seclusion, disillusion, & ceasing, then it matures into release!
When he develops the Investigation Link to Awakening, based upon total
seclusion, disillusion, & ceasing, then it culminates into mental release!
When he develops the Energy Link to Awakening, based upon seclusion,
disillusioned disgust, & ceasing of craving, then it blossoms into release!
When he develops the Joy Link to Awakening, based on solitary seclusion,
detached disgust, and ceasing of craving, then it progresses into release!
When he develops the Tranquillity Link to Awakening, based upon complete
isolation, disillusion, & ceasing, then it comes to a climax of final release!
When he develops the Concentration Link to Awakening, while alone and
reclusive, undeceived, & cooled, there is breakthrough of mental release!
When he develops the Equanimity Link to Awakening, based upon seclusion,
disillusioned disgust, & ceasing of craving, then it flourishes into release!
It is, Ananda, when the Seven Links to Awakening are trained & refined in
this way, that they fulfil the causes of True Wisdom and Final Release!

A quite good Dhamma Friend once asked:
Question: What is a phenomenon?
Answer:
A phenomenon is an experienced state! An appearance, an observed event, a conscious occasion!
Whether experienced as a mental object: Ex: An experienced thought, idea, feeling, mood etc.
or experienced as a physical object: Ex: An experienced sight, sound, smell, taste or touch;
the experience is just a mental ‘state’, which is what in Buddhism is called a ‘Dhamma’ , which
is a passing moment of conscious time… As such: Everything in any world is just a mental state!
No thing exists as an independent physical object, until it is observed by a mental experience…
Before and after this direct observation, this ‘thing’ remains just an ‘idea’ or ‘’imagination’ …
A mere potential possibility! Not quite as real anymore… Any phenomenon is an experienced
object, a neurally generated image, a mere representation, and not the object itself!
An image of an apple, is not the apple itself...
They once asked the Buddha:
What is the Cause of a Phenomenon?
He replied:
Attention (manasikara) is the cause of any phenomenon!
Why so?
When Attention is present, the Phenomenon appears...
When Attention is absent, the Phenomenon disappears!
and further later added:
This World both Begins and Ends within this 2 fathom frame of bones... SN I 62
The ALL is thereby actually just a sensed & experienced representation... SN IV 15
Insisting on Real Direct Experience:
This ultra-realistic emphasis on direct experience is today called Radical Empiricism,
a pragmatic concept, which in our time philosophically was coined by William James.
For further on Phenomena as mere mental states:

The Phenomenon ‘Match’
Occurring only momentarily by experienced observation!
Not ‘out there’ as a ‘substance’, but 'in here' in mind,
as just a passing mental state…

Contact causes Feeling causes Craving causes Suffering!
This have I heard. At this time the Blessed One was living in a Brick-House.
Then while being all alone, the Blessed Buddha spoke this deep Dhamma:
In dependence on the eye and the forms, visual consciousness arises...
In dependence on the ear and the sounds, auditory consciousness arises...
In dependence on the nose and the odours, olfactory consciousness arises...
In dependence on the tongue and flavours, gustatory consciousness arises...
In dependence on the body and the touches, tactile consciousness arises...
In dependence on the mind and the thoughts, mental consciousness arises...
The meeting of these three phenomena, is Contact (phassa)...
Conditioned by this contact, then feeling comes into being.
Conditioned by this feeling, then craving arises.
Conditioned by this craving, then clinging emerges.
Conditioned by this clinging, the process of becoming is initiated.
Conditioned by becoming, rebirth of the next moment & a next life happens.
Conditioned by this recurring birth, ageing, decay, sickness, & death arrive!
Such is the cause of this conditioned origin of an accumulation of suffering!
In dependence on the eye and forms, then visual consciousness arises...
In dependence on the ear and sounds, then auditory consciousness arises...
In dependence on the nose and odours, then olfactory consciousness arises...
In dependence on the tongue and flavours, gustatory consciousness arises...
In dependence on the body and touches, then tactile consciousness arises...
In dependence on the mind and thoughts, then mental consciousness arises...
The meeting of these three phenomena, is Contact (phassa)...
Conditioned by contact feeling arises. But by the complete stilling, & ceasing
of that same craving, thereby comes the instantaneous cessation of clinging!
The ending of clinging ceases becoming. The ending of becoming ceases birth.
The ending of birth ceases ageing, sickness, death, sorrow, pain & much panic!
That is the cause of the conditioned ceasing of this entire mass of suffering!
Now a certain Bhikkhu was then standing listening to the Blessed One.
The Blessed One saw him standing there listening and said to him: Did you hear
that Dhamma explanation, bhikkhu? Yes, Sir! Learn that Dhamma exposition,
Bhikkhu, remember it, make it as if your own, master it, since that Dhamma
is advantageous, fundamental and essential to all of the Noble life...!

From external Element to internal Urge to silly Search:
There is the element of eye-sensitivity, the element of visual form, these induce
the element of visual consciousness. The coincidence of these three, is eye Contact...
In dependence on this element of visual-sensitivity, there arises eye-contact.
In dependence on eye-contact, there arises a feeling, born of eye-contact.
In dependence on feeling born of eye-contact, there arises instant craving...
In dependence on the element of visual form, there arises perception.
In dependence on this visual experience, tendency towards a form arises.
In dependence on this inclination, desire for particular visible forms arises.
In dependence on this specific desire, a fever for these specific forms arises.
In dependence on this fever for form, search after these certain forms arises.
In dependence on this search for form, reaching out, acquisition & panic clinging
to a manifold of forms, comes into being... Such is the arising of this entire
mass of ever frustrated suffering...
Similarly with the pairs of ear & sound, nose & smell, tongue & taste, body & touch,
mind & mental states and their respective specific kinds of consciousness.
This search, this urge, this compulsive drive, is caused by that craving !
Craving that was born from feeling, which was arised from contact…
Any Craving causes Suffering...
Right here and now, later and much later...
Right there at greeting Contact, is this Suffering therefore born...
Right there at avoiding Contact, is this Suffering therefore left...

There are four kinds of Mental Clinging:
The Blessed Buddha once said:
Bhikkhus: There are these four kinds of Clinging. What four?
1: Clinging to Sense-Pleasures...
2: Clinging to Various Views...
3: Clinging to Rituals and Superstition…
4: Clinging to an an Ego-Concept…
These are the four kinds of Clinging!
This Noble 8-fold Way is to be developed for the direct experience of the
four kinds of clinging, for the full understanding of these clingings,
for their complete elimination, and for their final overcoming, abandoning
and leaving all behind…
The Noble 8-fold Way is to be developed for the ceasing of all clinging!
Comment:
1: The 1st kind of clinging to sights, sounds, smells, flavours, touches, and
thoughts is fairly obvious, yet still long habituated and thus tenacious...
2: Clinging is to Views is thinking: Doing good deeds are completely useless.
Doing evil have no consequences! No action has any effect on my future!
3: Clinging to rituals & superstition is like thinking that fire, bathing, and
various empty rituals, like wearing funny hats & praying, can purify mind…
3: Clinging to an Ego-concept, personality-belief, & a 'self' is the assuming
an unchanging internal entity ‘I-Me', which however is non-existent...
The proximate cause of all clinging is Craving, which have to be left!
This is the 2nd Noble Truth! Clinging means: adherence, attachment, grip,
clasping, clutching, grasping, stubbornly and tenaciously sticking to.
The word pali word the Buddha used ‘Upadana’ literally means ‘taking up’
indicating that as soon as one takes up the object, then clinging occurs!
Sariputta once said:
When, friends, a Noble Disciple understands clinging, the cause of clinging,
the ceasing of clinging, and the way leading to the ceasing of clinging, in
that way he is one of right view, whose view is straight, who has perfect
confidence in the Dhamma, and has arrived at this true Dhamma...
And what is clinging, what is the cause of clinging, what is the ceasing of
clinging, what is the way to the cease clinging?
Friends: There are these 4 kinds of clinging: clinging to sense-pleasures,
clinging to views, clinging to rituals & superstition, and the subtle clinging
to the ego-concept of an assumed inner self. With the arising of craving,
clinging also arises. With the ceasing of craving, clinging thus ceases too!
The way leading to the ceasing of clinging is just this Noble 8-fold Way:
Right View, Right, Motivation, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood,
Right Effort, Right Awareness, and Right Concentration…

At this Fullmoon Day do all Buddhas Awaken:
2010 May 27 Vesak Day celebrates birth, Enlightenment, and passing away
of the Buddha Gotama. Rejoice! Keep clean, calm, cool, clever, and caring...
About this Buddhist Vesak Festival: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vesak
This May full moon also celebrates the Buddha's third visit to Sri Lanka in
the eighth year after his Enlightenment where he journeyed to Kelaniya on
the invitation of the Naga King Maniakkhika (Mahavamsa i,72ff.).
The day also celebrates the crowning of king Devanampiyatissa (Mhv.Xi.42),
and the laying of the foundation stone of the Maha Stupa (Mhv.Xxix.1)
Please Remember:
At this very May full moon in year 528 BC the Blessed Buddha awakened
by completely perfect and utterly unsurpassable self-Enlightenment!
At that time a girl named Sujata Senani lived in Uruvela. When adult she
prayed before a certain Banyan tree, that she might get a good husband
equal to herself in caste & that her firstborn may be a son. Her prayer was
successful. Since indeed it did happen. At the full moon day of the Wesak
month, she rose at early dawn and milked the cows. As soon as new buckets
were placed under the cows, the milk poured spontaneously in streams all by
itself! Seeing this miracle, she knew something special was happening!
That same night the Future Buddha dreamt 5 dreams making him conclude:
"Surely, truly, without any doubt, today I will reach perfect Enlightenment!"
His 5 colored radiance illuminated the whole tree. Then Sujata came and
offered the cooked milk rice into the hands of this Great Being.
Later a local grass-cutter came going with a bundle of grass just harvested
from nearby. He offered the Great Being 8 handfuls of Kusa grass, when he
saw that this Sage was a Holy Man. The Future Buddha accepted the grass
and proceeded to the foot of the Bodhi-tree. Reaching the imperturbable
Eastern side, where all the Buddhas take their seat, he sat down saying to
himself: This is the immovable spot, where all the prior supreme Buddhas
have planted themselves! This is the place for destroying this net of desire!
Then the Future Buddha turned his back to the trunk and thus faced east.
Right there, he then resolutely settled on this mighty decision:
Let just blood and flesh of this body dry up & let skin and sinews fall from
the bones. I will not leave this seat before having attained the absolute and
Supreme Self-Enlightenment!
Mara then yelled: "Siddhattha, leave this seat. It is not yours, but mine!"
Hearing this, the Well-gone One replied: Mara, neither have you fulfilled the
10 perfections to the third degree, nor have you given the 5 great donations.
Neither have you striven for insight, nor for the welfare of all the world,
nor for supreme self-enlightenment! Therefore does this very seat surely
not belong to you, but truly indeed only to me. Suddenly overpowered by fear
Mara's followers fled helter-skelter in all directions. Not two went in the
same direction, but leaving their weapons in a chaos, they all fled terrified
by metaphysical panic. Seeing them flee thus, the great assembly of deities
triumphantly shouted: Mara is defeated. Prince Siddhattha has won! Let us
celebrate this truly sublime, wonderful and unique victory! It was before
the sun had set that the Tathagata conquered Mara and defeated his army.
That same night, after having bathed, while the Bo tree rained red sprigs onto
his robe, The Consummate One gained knowledge of his prior lives during the
1st watch of the night: "With the mind thus concentrated, purified, bright,
unified, focused, tractable, compliant, steady & imperturbable, I directed
mind to remembrance of my past lives. I recollected many past lives, i.e., one
re-birth, two...five, ten... 50, a hundred, a thousand, 100 thousand, many eons
of cosmic contraction, & many eons of cosmic expansion: There I had such
a name, belonged to such a clan & species, had such a body. Such was my food,
such my life of pleasures and pains. Such was the end of my life. Passing away
from that state, I re-arose there. There I had such name, belonged to such
a sort & family, had such a form. Such was my food, such my experience of
pleasures & pains. Such was the end of my life. Passing away from that state,
I re-arose here. Thus I remembered my various past lives in all their various
modes and manifold details. This was the first knowledge I attained in the
first watch of the night. Ignorance was destroyed; the knowledge arose;
darkness was destroyed; light arose as happens in one who is alert, aware,
and determined. But the very pleasant feeling that arose by this did neither
invade my mind, nor remain. With the mind thus concentrated, purified, bright,
intact, pliant, malleable, steady, and totally imperturbable, I directed it to
the knowledge of the passing away and reappearance of beings. I saw by
means of the divine eye, purified & surpassing the human eye! I saw beings
passing away & re-appearing, and I realized how & why they are high or low,
beautiful or ugly, fortunate and unfortunate all in exact accordance with
the intentions of their prior actions: These beings who were endowed with
bad behaviour of body, speech, and mind, who reviled the Noble Ones, held
wrong views & acted under the influence of wrong views, with the break-up
of the body, after death, have re-appeared in the plane of misery, the bad
painful destination, the lower realms, even in hell. But the beings who were
gifted with good behaviour of body, speech and mind, who did not revile the
Noble Ones, who held right views and acted under the influence of right
views after the break-up of the body, after the death, have re-appeared in
happy destinations, even in a divine world! Thus by means of the divine eye,
purified and surpassing the human I saw beings passing away & re-appearing,
all in accordance with their particular mixture of good and bad kamma...
But the satisfaction that arose here did neither invade my mind, nor remain.
With the mind thus concentrated and completely absorbed, I then directed
it towards understanding the ending of mental fermentation. I realized how
it actually comes to be, that:
This is Suffering...
Such is the Cause of Suffering...
Such is the End of Suffering...
Such is the Way to End Suffering...
Such was the mental fermentations...
Such is the Cause of mental fermentation...
Such is the End of mental fermentation...
Such is the Way leading to the end of mental fermentation.
When my mind saw that, it was instantly freed of the fermentation of all
sense-desire, it was released from the fermentation of becoming, and it
became fully uncovered from the fermentation of ignorance. Thus fully and
perfectly Enlightened - The Buddha - perceiving this immense glory, spoke
these 2 solemn verses, which never has been omitted by any of countless
billions of prior Buddhas:
Through this round of countless existences have I searched, but yet failed
to find "the Creator", who framed this construction: What Suffering indeed
is such endless birth, ageing, decay, sickness and ever repeated death!
Now I see that "the Constructor" of this structure is Craving...!!! Never shall
this construction be built again, since all the rafters are shattered and the
main beam is busted and completely broken... At this calming of all Craving,
the mind was finally, irreversibly and ultimately stilled…
Then, friends, this revelation of certainty arose in me: This release is indeed
immutable, this is the very last rebirth, this endless reappearance has finally
come to a happy end... Nibbana is verily the Highest Bliss!
Happy Vesak to All Beings!

How is Faith & Confidence Advantageous?
Faith is the first of the 5 Elements of Effort (padhaniyanga):
1: Faith, 2: Health, 3: Sincerity, 4: Energy, and 5: Understanding.
Faith is main factor of the 4 Streams of Merit (puñña-dhara):
1: Unshakable faith in the Buddha,
2: Unshakable faith in the Dhamma,
3: Unshakable faith in the Sangha,
4: Quite Perfected Morality.
Faith is the first of the 7 Treasures (dhana):
1: Faith,
2: Morality,
3: Shame,
4: Fear of Wrongdoing,
5: Learning,
6: Generosity,
7: Understanding.
Faith is seed, the entrance, the initiator, the ticket, the beginning.
Understanding is the highest, the goal, the diamond-cutter, the end.
Both are Floods of Advantage, Fabulous Fruits, Leading to Happiness!

Maintain this Noble Wish of Sympathy:
May I be happy, may I sustain my happiness by living without trace of enmity.
May all beings be happy & successful: May they be of full of joy, all beings
that breathe & have life, whether they are weak or strong, tiny or huge,
visible or invisible, near or far away, born or to be born, let all beings enjoy
safety, content ease and a serene bliss!
Let no one deceive another, let no one be harsh in speech, let no one by anger
or hatred wish bad for his neighbour. Even as a mother, at the risk of her life,
guards and protects her only child, so with a boundless heart of compassion,
I venerate all living beings by permeating this entire universe with sympathy,
above, beneath and all around, without limit, immeasurable and endless!
In this very fine way I cultivate an infinite goodwill toward this whole world.
Standing or walking, sitting or lying down, during all my waking hours I will
always treasure and dwell in this thought, knowing that this way of caring
is the most Noble in this entire universe!
Thus shall I, by stilling pointless discussions and controversies, and by acting
blamelessly, be gifted with tranquillity and true insight into what is profound.
Thus shall I subdue the urge for sense-pleasure, and never again know rebirth.
May this also inspire and thereby cause all other sentient beings to fulfil the
conditions leading swiftly to Nibbana, which is the only lasting happiness!
May all sentient beings be thus liberated & fully released from all suffering.
May all sentient beings thus escape the dangers of ageing, disease, & death.

It appears as Lasting, but it is never!
The Blessed Buddha once said:
Bhikkhu, There is no lasting materiality, no lasting form whatsoever...
There is no lasting feeling whatsoever...
There is no lasting perception whatsoever...
There is no lasting mental construction whatsoever...
There is no lasting conscious awareness whatsoever...
Nothing here is permanent, everlasting, eternal, not subject to change,
not transient, not vanishing! Nothing is stable, safe or lasting ... !!!
SN 22.96/vol. iii, 144
The eye is impermanent, visual forms, eye-consciousness, eye contact,
and whatever is felt as pleasant, painful or neither-painful-nor-pleasant,
born of this eye-contact, that also is impermanent...
The ear is impermanent, sounds, hearing-consciousness, ear contact,
and whatever is felt as pleasant, painful or neither-painful-nor-pleasant,
born of this ear-contact, that also is impermanent...
The nose is impermanent, smells, smelling-consciousness, nose contact,

The body is impermanent, touches, touching-consciousness, body contact,

The mind is impermanent, thoughts, thinking-consciousness, mind contact,
and whatever is felt as pleasant, painful or neither-painful-nor-pleasant,
born of this mind-contact, that also is impermanent...
SN 35.43/vol. iv, 28
All formations, all constructions, all conditions are impermanent...
MN 35/vol. i, 230
Whatever can emerge, that will indeed also cease...
MN 56/vol. i, 380
Impermanence, as pointed out in the commentaries, is not always Evident
unless specifically looked for! Know it in advance and then you can see it...
False Apparent Continuity covers up and camouflages Impermanence:
The characteristic of impermanence does not become apparent because,
when rise and fall are not given attention, it is concealed by continuity...
However, when apparent continuity is disrupted by discerning rise and fall,
the characteristic of impermanence becomes apparent in its true nature.
Vism. Ch. xxi/p. 640
Observing the abrupt Change of all States discloses their discrete nature:
When continuity is disrupted means when continuity is exposed by observation
of the perpetual alteration of states as they go on occurring in succession.
For it is not through the connectedness of states, that the characteristic of
impermanence becomes apparent to one who rightly observes rise and fall,
but rather the transience characteristic becomes properly evident through
these states discrete disconnectedness, regarded as if each moment were
iron darts hitting the screen of awareness. Or as single pearls on a string,
but not continuous as the string itself...
VismA. 824

Distorted perception imagines: Worldly Happiness is possible!
The Blessed Buddha once said:
Dukkhanupassanam bhavento sukhasaññam pajahati...
When gradually developing the contemplation of Suffering (dukkha),
one gradually overcomes the false perception of pleasure, of happiness...
He once convinced a pedantic disputant by this cut-2-the-bone explanation:
Friend Aggivessana, what do you think, is any material form, is any feeling,
is any perception, is any mental construction, and is any consciousness,
always permanent or always impermanent?
Venerable Gotama, they are all always impermanent...
If all these things always are impermanent, are they then pleasurable or
are they then disappointing and painful? Are they then happiness or suffering?
Venerable Gotama, then they are all painful, then they are all suffering...
Aggivessana, what do you think, when one searches for what is suffering,
clings to what is suffering, resorts to what is suffering, holds on to what
is suffering and regards what is suffering as: "This is mine, this I am,
this is my self..." can one then ever come to understand suffering or
ever be freed from all suffering?
How could one ever Master Gotama, no never Master Gotama...
Source: MN I [232]
At Savatthi the Venerable Radha asked the Blessed One:
Venerable Sir, one says: Suffering!! What, Venerable Sir, is suffering?
Form, Radha, is suffering, feeling is suffering, perception is suffering,
mental constructions are suffering, consciousness is suffering...!
Understanding this, Bhikkhu, a well instructed Noble Disciple experiences
disgust towards form, disgust towards feeling, disgust towards perception,
disgust towards mental construction, and disgust towards consciousness itself!
Experiencing disgust, he becomes disillusioned! Through disillusion his mind is
released. When it is released, he instantly knows: This mind is liberated, and
he understands: Extinguished is this rebirth, this Noble Life is all completed,
done is what should be done, there is no state of being beyond this...

Egolessness is the essential core of Buddhism
Question: What is the first hindrance (samyojana=fetter=mental chain)
blocking entrance to the Noble Path leading to Nibbana (sotapatti-magga)?
Answer: This first hindrance is Personality View (Sakkaya-ditthi):
"Permanent personality" belief,
"Same Self" as baby & old person assumption,
"I am this Me" self-deceit,
"This Body is my Own" notion,
"This Body is my Self" notion,
"This Body is ME" notion,
"This Body is my Person" notion
"I have a permanent Ego" concept
"Body is mine+own+person" view
"Feeling is mine+own+person" view
"Perception is mine+own+person" view
"Construction is mine+own+person" view
"Consciousness is mine+own+person" view
All are conjectures of the false assumption, that these phenomena are
stable entities, that can be kept unchanging & thereby definable as the
core of a self, an identity, a soul or other metaphysical entity as an ego!
"A person" however is rather a process, a transient flux of conditions,
continuously becoming otherwise and something else. We are all more
different from what we were 5 minutes ago, than we are different
from another person ... Never are we the same person ... !
The false assumption: "This is Mine" is obviously rooted in desire.
The false assumption: "This is Me, this I Am" is rooted in self-deception.
The false assumption: "This is my self" is rooted in a personality view.
The always changing 'personality' is thus : "
Na ca so, na ca anno" Neither the same, nor another!
Source: King Milinda's Questions. Milindapanha.
Any "Person" is:
Always changing, not the same, not identical, and thus
without any identity, yet neither another, but continuously
becoming an otherwise and different set of phenomena!
Ownerless and empty of definable sameness:
Any part of a 'person' is just a momentary mental or physical
state, that arises and ceases, and thus cannot be owned or kept
by any 'self' or 'ego'. These states arise due to conditions not
fully under 'our' control, but due to their own nature. They are
dependent on both internal and external conditions, which
cannot be controlled by any 'agent', 'ego', 'self' or 'me'!
Don't feel fear that 'you' have now lost "your self" Why not?
Because a metaphysical & imagined 'self', that was never there
in the 1st place, cannot ever be lost or anything else...
Secondly: Self-"I"-dentification with something that does not
exist, remains a falsehood, yet nevertheless 'we' loves this
void and empty puppet 'me' beyond anything else... This is not a
case of the emperor's new clothes, since here the ego-emperor
is not even there, except as an imagined very evil concept called
Egoism!
The Buddha once said:
View the world as Empty
Thus always Aware, Mogharaja
Giving up belief in any Self
One may escape Death,
since the king of Death cannot
see one with such void view.
Sutta Nipata 1119

The Three Undeniable Global Properties:
Q: Is the body and all external form, lasting or transient? A: Transient
Q: Is feeling, pleasant or not, lasting or transient? A: Transient!
Q: Is experienced perceptions lasting or transient? A: Transient!
Q: Is the mental constructions lasting or transient? A: Transient!
Q: Is naked awareness = consciousness lasting or transient? A: Transient!
Q: Is the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body and mind, lasting or transient?
Q: Is form, sound, smell, taste, touch and thought, lasting or transient?
Q: Is solidity, fluidity, heat, motion, and space, lasting or transient?
Answer: All these are Transient!, Impermanent!, Temporary!, Fleeting!
Q: Is what is transient, happiness or suffering? A: Decay is Suffering!
Q: Is what is transient, ever changing and therefore frustrating pain
suitable to be regarded as: "This is Mine, This I Am, This is Me"
"This I can Keep, This I can control, This I Posses, This is my Self" ... ???
Answer: No certainly Not ...!!!, since what is self must be keepable, same,
constant, controllable, under one's own full power, and thus pleasant...
As all these phenomena are none of this, they cannot ever be self!
Seeing this, understanding this, comprehending this, the Noble Learner is
disgusted by all form, disgusted by all sensing, by all physical, by all mental.
Being thus disgusted, one experiences an opening disillusion... The veil is off.
Without illusions, the mind is fully released and one immediately knows:
This mental liberation is final and irreversible. This - exactly this state -
is called Nibbana, experienced is this very life ...

Neglect Looses All, while Careful Alertness Wins All!
At Savatthi the Blessed One once said this:
I will teach you, friends, about the one who lives negligent, and about
the one who lives alert. Listen cautiously and pay full attention to it!
How, friends, does one live Negligent?
In him, friends, who lives with an uncontrolled ability to see, the mind is
agitated and warped by the objects recognizable by the eye. In him whose
mind is agitated and warped, there is no satisfaction! Without satisfaction,
there is no joy! Where there is no joy, there is no contentment, no calm, no
tranquillity, and no mental peace! Without this calm, one thus lives in sorrow,
frustrated, urging, and searching! Such sorrowful person’s mind is neither
composed, nor collected, nor confident. When the mind is not composed, one
has neither any clarity, nor any certainty! By not having any clear thinking,
one is reckoned as one, who lives negligent. One is regarded as confused...
So also it is for one who lives without any control over the ability to hear,
smell, taste, touch and without any control over the ability to think…
And how, friends, does one live Alert?
In him, who lives with a fully controlled ability to see, the mind is neither
agitated, nor warped by any object recognizable by the eye. In one, whose
mind is neither agitated, nor warped, satisfaction is born! In one satisfied,
joy is born. When one is joyful, the body is calmed down. He, whose body is
calmed, feels at ease. Composed is mind of one, who is at ease. When mind is
composed, one’s ideas are clear. One gains certainty & assured confidence!
By having clear ideas and thinking, one is reckoned as one who lives alert, &
as one, who is alert! So also it is for any one, who lives with full control over
the ability to hear, smell, taste, touch or controlling the ability to think.
Thus, friends, is one, who lives ready and aware in alertness.
Comments:
Not seduced by the mere glitter of sensation of any kind, not running after
fancy dreams, driven by hopes or compelled longing. By not yearning after
pleasant sensations, satisfied by whatever there is, thus at ease, stilled,
one remains just calm, cleared and cooled... Like a Smiling Mountain :-)

What is Mind and Consciousness?
A friend asked: What is Mind?
Mind (Mano) is an ever changing collection of these 5 phenomena:
1: Contact, 2: Feeling, 3: Perception, 4: Intention and 5: Attention!
Regarding Consciousness itself:
Consciousness is NOT created by the brain, but RESIDES WITHIN the brain!
Just like the beer is inside the bottle, but is not created by the bottle...
To identify Mind only with Brain is a (false) view, which actually is a philosophical
(often dogmatic) standpoint, and NOT a scientifically & experimentally verified fact.
This tantalizing IDEA is called physicalism or materialism!
On this common, yet wrong assumption named Mind-Brain Identity Theory see:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Type_physicalism
http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/mind-identity/
http://www.philosophyofmind.info/mindbrainidentity.html
Consciousness is information. Information is definitely real, but not material...
Luminous is the Mind said the Buddha:
Interestingly: When one person sees light in a dark room, another distant person's
brain emits low level light, if they are magnetically identically pulsed: Full text here:

Craving for Sense Pleasure causes Pain!
The Blessed Buddha once said:
Truly, due to craving for sense pleasure, conditioned by sensuous
craving, compelled by craving for sense pleasure, entirely pushed by
craving for sense pleasure, kings fight with kings, princes fight with
princes, priests with priests, citizens with citizens; mother quarrels
with son, son with mother; father with son, son with father; brother
with brother, brother with sister, sister with brother, friend fights
even with his friend. Thus, lost in conflict, quarreling, and hostilities,
they attack one another with fists, sticks or weapons. And thereby
they suffer death or deadly pain. And further, due to this craving
for sense pleasure, people break into houses, rob, plunder, pillage
whole villages, commit highway robbery, & seduce the wives of others.
Then the rulers have such people caught and inflict on them various
forms of punishment. And thereby they meet death or deadly pain!
This is the misery of sensuous craving: The accumulation of pain in
this present life, due to craving for short and trivial sense pleasure...
Furthermore, one accepts evil modes of action, speech, and thought!
Thus, at the break-up of the body after death, one fall into a bad
state of existence, a state of suffering, into perdition, even into
the inferno of hell. All this misery results from sensuous craving...
Such is the heaping up of future suffering caused by craving for
this short-lived simple sense pleasure...
All Craving causes Suffering!
Blissful is being without passions in this world,
Blissful is the overcoming of all sense-desires!
Udana II, 1

Reality is Moments of Mentality & Materiality!
Nama-Rupa = Name-and-Form, Naming-and-Forming!
The mind is that, which knows the object! The object is that, which is known!
These two processes always arise and cease together simultaneously...
Neither inside, within, nor apart from, outside these two is any observer agent,
person, I, Me, or other assumed entity as a hidden variable, ever involved!
The mind is immaterial, formless and invisible. The object may be designated
or named 'material', 'physical', 'formed' and even 'visible' only and exactly
to the extent and in so far as it is experiencable by the mind!
No same, constant, lasting 'real', 'actual' or 'substantial substance' has ever
existed 'out there' independently or separable from the mind, that right then
momentarily perceived and thereby apprehended, displayed, manifested and
designated it! This core dual pair of mentality (nama) and materiality (rupa),
is thus one united yet dual continuum, like the two ends of the same stick!
They do never emerge, nor do they ever exist, nor can they ever be observed
separately, in and of themselves, but they can only arise in mutual dependence,
like two thin creepers can only arise & stand up if intertwined with each other.
Mentality & materiality thus arise and cease simultaneously in each moment!
They are thus the most basic, fundamental and primary pair on the bottom of
the dynamic ever-changing process of any being in any existence...
What is called 'matter' is delimited, defined, characterized, conceptualized,
compartmentalized and even named by mind! Therefore can matter never be
separated from mind, like if one tries to break the dual-ended stick in order
to separate the ends, then one always gets two sticks, still each with 2 ends!
Therefore one unambiguously always ends up with observing a pair-wise new
event of mentality & materiality! The basic founding, yet often unnoticed,
unspoken and maybe even sometimes actively denied assumption underlying
all Western science that: The naked, inert, objective observation is possible!
'Matter can be observed and analyzed objectively, independently of mind!'
is therefore utterly false, futile and even somewhat childish... No observation
can ever be independent of mind! Why not? What is observing IS the mind!
The naive physicist who postulates: 'Independently of Mind, "I!" will observe,
describe and evaluate matter!' extending out of his range of understanding,
thus speaks folly false and is thereby later ultimately enforced to introduce
'mysti-phystical' entities as 'hidden variables' into his explanations, in order
to reach completeness, coherence and internal consistence...
He seems to be in complete oblivion of the dry fact, that even before one even
thinks of, even speaks of, or experiment with any 'matter', mind have indeed
been long and hard at work! The basic hidden, yet always present, factor in
any observation, is naturally mind itself!
However, this factor is not so hidden, that it cannot be observed & analyzed
and that even without any laboratory or even a single 'instrument' apart from
a pillow to sit on!
Everyone, without even a single exception, who sits down with closed eyes, will
instantly be overwhelmed by a veritable storm of mentally created distractions:
This is the Mind! This is mental activity knocking your door... Undeniably real!
When this dynamic self-sustaining duality of mentality-materiality, this self-
sustaining perpetum mobile, cease to evolve, consciousness thereby ceases to
establish itself on an object! This - only this, in and of itself - is the very final
End of all Suffering...

Experiencing Danger removes false Complacency of Lasting Safety!
The Blessed Buddha once said:
What, Ananda, is the experience of Danger?
Here the Bhikkhu considers thus: Truly, this body is prone to sickness, full of
countless painful Dangers. Many kinds of suffering arise in this body, such as:
Diseases of eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, head, mouth, tooth-ache, pneumonia,
asthma, colds, angina, fever, belly ache, fainting, diarrhoea, kidney failure,
cholera, leprosy, arthritis, psoriasis, tuberculosis, epilepsy, anaemia, scabies,
ring-worm, psychosis, bilious jaundice, diabetes, strokes & palsy, cancer, piles,
boils, fistulas, diseases brought about by cold, heat, starvation, disturbed or
failing excretion, disharmonic living, climatic changes, environmental pollution,
accidents, social unrest, stress or violence or due to kamma! Thus does he live
while regularly experiencing the inherent Danger of having a physical body.
This is the experience of Danger.

What is the Deathless State?
A certain not very well known Bhikkhu once asked the Blessed Buddha:
Venerable Sir, the removal of Greed, Hate, and Ignorance, is it often said…
What, Venerable Sir, is the real meaning of that statement?
This removal of Greed, Hate, & Ignorance is a description of the dimension
of Nibbana…The final elimination of the mental fermentations is spoken of
just like that.
Then that Bhikkhu asked the Blessed One:
Venerable Sir, the Deathless, the Deathless, is it often said…
What, Sir, is this Deathless and what is the way leading the Deathless?
The destruction of Greed, of Hate, and the destruction of Ignorance:
This is called the Deathless. The Noble 8-fold Way is the way leading to
this Deathless; that is:

One becomes Calmed by Stilling all Agitation!
The brahmin Magandiya asked the Buddha about how to become calmed:
Not dwelling in the past, stilled in the present, one prefers no kind of future!
Without irritation, without agitation, without regrets, without worry, neither
boasting, nor proud, but humble and modest, one is indeed a restrained sage...
Withdrawn, not opposed to anything, not wanting anything, all unconcerned,
aloof, gentle, independent, for such one there exists neither craving or fear
for any kind of existence, nor craving or fear for any form of non-existence...
Such calmed one is indifferent to sense pleasures, detached, not clinging to
any kind of property! For him there is nothing more to take up or lay down!
For whatever others might accuse him, he remains tranquil and not agitated!
Neither opposing anything, nor attracted to anything, with nothing of his own,
not perturbed by what does not exist, such tranquil one is truly calmed!

The Deepest Tranquilization is that of Greed, Hate and Ignorance!
The Blessed Buddha once said:
Formerly, when that person was still ignorant, then he was possessed & obsessed
by sexual & sensual greed, lust, desire, yearning, envy, jealousy, and miserliness...
He was obsessed & possessed by hate, anger, ill-will, irritation and stubbornness...
He was obsessed and possessed by ignorance, doubt, delusion & plain foolishness...
These evils are now overcome by him, eradicated, like a slashed and uprooted tree,
completely destroyed, and therefore unable to sprout into existence ever again!
Therefore such Bhikkhu, thus endowed, is indeed enriched by the highest Calm!
This tranquillization is his unshakable foundation! Since this, friends, is the very
highest and most precious: The Tranquillization of Greed, Hate, and Ignorance!!!

Seeing Disgusting Objects Dispels Greed!
The Blessed Buddha once said:
Awareness of the Body induces all advantageous qualities including clear
comprehension! The ancients said: Protect the sign, protect the nimitta...!
The Asubha Nimitta is a Disgusting Sign fixed in memory by meditation,
that one can redirect mind to whenever overcome by lust, greed and desire.
This sign detaches the mind from clinging to mere forms of foul impurities...
One then gain an 'off' button to turn 'off' desire and craving... This indeed
is the very KEY to disable suffering, since craving is the primary cause of all
suffering. Corpse Meditation (Asubha-Bhavana) effectively reduces desire!
