I understand that part of being a Zen practitioner is participating in "interviews" with a Zen master (or some teacher). What should be expected from an interview? What is involved?

I've had a couple; one with a Rinzai fellow at retreat, and one with my current dharma teacher, in the Thich Nhat Hanh tradition. They were basically just informal gab sessions. Think of questions about your practice, be it meditation or day-to-day interpretation of the dharma, and see if they have anything to contribute.
