Peace Corps and other organizations

edited March 2010 in Buddhism Basics
I've always wanted to join the peace corps but I'm starting to have second thoughts.

I'm starting to wonder if perhaps theres a way I can volunteer in under developed countries without having to go through a government agency.

Does anybody know of any organizations that do good work like the peace corps?

I had an internship with the International Rescue Committee, did some local work with refugee resettlement. They do similar work overseas. Honestly though if you're graduating from college, I think the peace corps is the best bet because when you get back you have a full year of non-competitive eligibility for govt. jobs so you're pretty much guaranteed a job when you get back to the states. That's my plan when I graduate from college, that or the JET program.

I used to work with someone who was in the Peace Corp. If you want I can see if I can contact her and get some info. I can't guarantee anything though, she kind of fell of the face of the earth and I haven't talked to her in a while.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of organizations around the world that do wonderful things just like the Peace Corps. If you want a Buddhist slant, try the Seva Foundation (www.seva.org). There are others too numerous to count. Try Googling "overseas volunteer work" and you'll get a ton of hits.
