Buddhism teaches to help and not to harm. Also teaches to train the mind to be workable for the person. A person who has been transformed by the teachings benefits themselves because they know things about the mind and how to deal with difficult states of mind and how to establish positive states of mind. They can also benefit friends and community and they are not harming them.
