Treat yourself and others kindly and you wont have guilt that prevents you from relaxing.

In buddhism we say that we are suffering due to craving and we are craving due to ignorance.

In order to destroy the ignorance we have to have wisdom and insight. In order to have a chance for that insight we need to have stable concentration during meditation. In order to have stabile concentration we have ethics. Because we believe in karma we believe that if we are doing negative things we will suffer the consequences. Such would disturb us and break the concentration. But by living ethically we prevent that. Also when our wisdom and insight does come that makes it easier to be ethical because we have the wisdom to see the reason, it makes it more natural. So it is a virtuous cycle.

Also there is more to buddhism than just the meditation cushion. In mahayana buddhism the bodhisattva path has its goal the liberation of all beings from suffering. Ethics comes from the bodhicitta which is cultivated along that path. In the case of that path it is spontaneous rather than contrived.
