Here is one other source that as a beginner, I'm finding to be quite useful from a historical and factual perspective.
I was lucky enough to find a copy at my local library and it provides an excellent background from a different perspective to the other readings that I have found.

This is a series of 24 lectures by a professor at Boston university Malcolm David Eckel which equals to a full college course on the history of Buddhism, it's part of his series of major world religions.
