i need an ego

edited March 2010 in Buddhism Basics
i need an ego. can anyone help me find a good ego? thanks. and i can't be buddha, so it has to be some sort of compromise.

I'm 17. I need to have an ego I can use when I'm hanging out with friends. I don't want to be pretentious and I don't want to be attractive (i have noticed attraction from other males that I do not want).

    Hi QF,

The Buddha did not urge all people towards non-ego. But he did encourage all people to develop self-respect.

Good ego comes from loving oneself; not doing things that harm oneself; plus caring for others as one would care for oneself.

    See Attavagga and Veludvareyya Sutta

    :)

Sounds like you've come a long way, QF. How're things at home?

i think we do zazen to release ourselves from the confinenment of our e nvironment and become more independent and in tune with our inner selves,, you keep doing zazen with an intrepid heart and do not be shaken by external environments, do not be shaken by anything be steadfast do not let your mind be bothered in the highest sense by things that disturb it , things that are actually quite trifling things, we do zazen to connect with our inner self, to know what to do at any moment, any social environment,, we learn to be flexible and pliant depending on who we are with , that our personality is fluid, and but also that there is something that makes us who we are, something firm yet receptive, that part of you when you are being completely honest with yourself, and to do this we be honest with ourselves do not be deceptive, if things are bad you admit it, if things are good you do not add any pride, never beating yourself up, staying strong and doing zazen and piercing into the depths of the mind & your life, contemplating, zazen

You could be the guy that listens very carefully although that might attract members of both sexes  You could combine that with a lack of bathing to balance out or perhaps just be very distant and reserved.

The ones I've habitually used/developed a lot caused me problems. i know i am going to have problems with any ego, but it's like choosing a car. i'm trying to at least settle for something with a 4 stroke engine.

Better. I try to avoid idle speech with my family (because of the great difference in our views, most anything we discuss can quickly turn into an angry argument), and I feel less anger towards my parents. I have gotten better at not getting sucked into their way of seeing things.

Thanks for the input everyone. It is good to know what to keep in mind when interacting with others. With practice I will get better.

    Ahh, i see.

The best advice i could give is to make your own ego. One that suits your needs in any situation.

I am a gentle warrior (sword of wisdom vs. suffering). a benevolent semi-god. here in this human world, i don't worry about their foolish problems TOO much because it'll be gone before they know it. however i do try to help them and myself.

    that's what i'm working on.

What I find that I need is calm and stability. And confidence that what I experience as confusion with time I will see clearly.

i was with friends all day and it went well. i meditated before and throughout the day.

at one point i thought it would be a good ego to be like the ents in the lord of the ring. i saw a big ol peaceful willow tree and i thought it would be cool to be like that peaceful wise tree.

ho hum you must be hasty folk! Let entmoot commence. First we will list the names of each existing ent. We must not be hasty. We do have long names. They only describe everything that has happened to us since the beginning of time!

Ok hobbits I got this ent draught for you to drink while we are discussing things:p It will make your ears grow and your toes wiggle.
