audio book / ipod recommendations

edited March 2010 in Buddhism Basics
Hi all,
as my only time to listen / read stuff is on my ipod at the gym, can anyone point out good stuff to listen to and where to find.
I tend towards the piratical "science" side rather than the mystical. So for example I loved HHDL universe in an atom but disliked a meaningful life audio (all the literal transmigration become a deity stuff).

I think I've listen to all the DL books(?) and a lot by a guy called Watts (sp?). I've also listened to a few on psychology and Buddhism. What else can people recommend. Thanks

Yeah Alan Watts is fun :)

"The Science of Enlightenment" by Shinzen Young, was what gave me my first "wait wut?" expereince/taste of Buddhism. Although he is a zen guy he explains the path with references to science and other religions. It's pretty long and gets pretty heavy and as such its taken me three listens over something like five years to understand it generally, but that was mainly because i twasnt in the right place to understand it yet.

    Confessions of an Economic Hitman.
Stefan molyneax has lots of free audiobook on his sight. Informative stuff:)
I would also recommend Ekhart Tolle on the spirital side.I like what he says about The Now and his voice is nice for audio:)

I do not reccomend "The Sound of Mediating" as its a bit too quiet:p

Ken McLeod's podcasts are excellent. The Unfettered Questions are brief, and a good place to start. The recordings of the class Ideology and Wisdom give a great overview of where Buddhist practice leads. Monsters Under the Bed is probably a good introduction to the role the six realms play in karma. (I haven't listened to Monsters, but some of the stuff I've read and heard by Ken covers the same ground.)

Thanks all. BTW I meant practical science, not the science practiced by 18th century buccaneers :D

By practical science, do you mean science that you can use in your everyday life? If so, I recommend Michael Pollan's books on food and nutrition. I particularly like In Defense of Food. On the Buddhist front, Pema Chodron has a very good set of audiobooks on various topics. Don't Bite the Hook is a good one on anger.

I don't know if theres audio for this book but I am reading Ethics for the New Milenium by HHDL. It is very good. Seems down to earth, practical, but also fresh to me.

You might have a listen to the following talks, they are all short 2 - 7 minutes, I have a bunch of them on my iPod for much the same reason as you. You can download them from YouTube or other sites and if you have an audio capture program.

I like Ven Robina Courtin talks. You can get them for free online on sites like Lam.Rim Radio etc. Just google for her name and dharma talks.

The same goes for Ajhan Brahm, good talks for free.

    Sangharakshita has some decent talks.

Thubten Chodron has free talks, Tenzin Palmo has free talks too I think.
