I think it's important to create an environment where everyone feels welcome to post. No insults.

I agree, if these forums looked too strict, I wouldn't have joined and it may have put me off looking for other boards. (Which would have been a very bad thing because this site has answered me and (mostly) questioned me when I really needed it.)

    *Looks at the mods*

But I think its fine as it is!

Now that's a great recommendation for this forum. Well done kikujiro.

I've heard a few old time posters say that the site has changed (and not for the better) since the beginning.

    Are they right? What happened?

Not sure, I started coming here after e sangha closed and found the environment hostile toward traditional Buddhism in general, which after a while seemed to improve but I had to leave for a while after all of the NKT propaganda and Mat's constant belligerence went un-attended to.

Hmm. I've arrived much later and missed most of that.

What is it you consider 'traditional' Buddhism? What is the NKT propaganda?

Sorry for the questions I'm just missing your referents.

    Hi

Would you rather it was like e-sanga where you were not allowed to really discuss rebirth?

    Mat

My early experience was that if you answered a question with an authentic Buddhist teaching you were either dismissed or beat up for it. The forum had a very "new age" feel when I first came around. Then it did get better, and then the NKT started creating a lot of threads in the "current events" section that I think now have been moved to the Experienced Buddhist section (for some weird reason). At the same time it seemed that Mat was creating multiple threads a day and playing the victim whenever people disagreed with him.

    Mat
People were openly allowed to discuss rebirth at e sangha. They just werent allowed to deny that Buddha taught it.
How many different accounts did you get banned from e sangha by the way?
    I'm sure it was many.

I think answering questions with traditional answers makes sense--especially when backed by personal experience from actual practice.

    Is NKT New Kadampa Tradition?

If you had your way, you'd have just broken the guidelines. Is there anything beneficial in that comment?

    Which further proves my point.
All of my posts in this thread should have been addressed by the mods for being off topic.

So you'll follow right speach on a forum if it's rule? But not otherwise?

I thought it was already a guideline if youre a Buddhist.

It's much harder to practice right speech ourselves than to point out someone else's wrong speech.

See I just did that myself.

Whether or not I am using right speech is debatable.
If using strong speech with an intent to foster a more conducive environment for actual discussion of Buddhism is wrong speech, then I am guilty as charged.
That would actually be a good topic for a thread.

Yeah but, the difference is that I'm not trying to make anything this way or that way for other people.
Nobody is trying "make" anything one way or another.
Choosing and implementing policies that foster constructive discussion is completely different that "making" anyone do anything.

Just the one account, and I dont think it was banned, just the threads closed.

I left once I realised how I couldnt talk freely there.

Would you prefer that you were not allowed to deny that the Buddha taught rebirth here, too?

Mat, one more thread like this one, and you will be banned.
I have been extremely - some may say - excessively - tolerant of your shenanigans.
    You now have a choice:
Stop banging your blasted drum abut your firm fixed belief on rebirth and the fact that this is your final life (got it, ok??) and continue being a contributing member.
Carry on banging your blasted drum abut your firm fixed belief on rebirth and the fact that this is your final life (got it, ok??) and find yourself out for good,

Or - Just go away of your own accord.

    There.
be grateful I've even given you a choice.
let me know which option you decide, and get it over with.

Shenpen, this isn't e-sangha. We're a lot more relaxed, accommodating and flexible here.
Either get over it, accept it and understand that this is the way things are here, or do what has been suggested to Mat elsewhere: Feel free to start your own forum and control it the way you would like to see it develop.
As a guest in our home, I don't really think it proper or appropriate for you to criticise the staff. They do their best to keep the place clean, welcoming and cosy, even if it is less tidy than you would like.
Give me comfort and geniality over strict legislation any time.
