You're the second person in not-so-long that has posted an interest in chanting. Odd. Well, what do you expect to get out of chanting? How would you say chanting is helpful in the cessation of suffering? If it helps, I'm all for it. I haven't had to chant yet to make progress though, so lay it on me and help me figure it all out. Or not. I'm going to go sit in a corner now. Ciao.

Hi chanting is another method to help focus the mind, just like Samatha and Vipassana.

In traditional samatha meditation, you focus the mind on the breath, in chanting, you focus the mind on the sound of the mantra.

Both brings about concentration, and hence insight and reflection when wild thoughts arise.

Chanting has the added benefit of constanly bringing the Buddha to mind. (in the case of Pure Land practice)

When you chant, your mind will naturally have less worldly, desirous thoughts. When you have less desirous thoughts, you will naturally have calm and insight. When you gain calm and insight, wisdom naturally surfaces.

Like Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh says, in our worldly life, we are constantly in pursuit of something. In spiritual life, we try to forgo something everyday. You don't have to "achieve" wisdom, it comes naturally when the mind is clear.

What do you expect to get out of sitting in a corner? Observing the breath, your thoughts, feelings? All that can be done by chanting too, and more.

Sorry I think I have been babbling, please excuse the long post.

Chanting is a beneficial way to remember to remember, like reciting a mantra. There are many practices used in the beginning of the practice of mindfulness. Chanting being one them. Many people use chanting their whole lives. One chant that is quite "famous" is "Om Mani Padme Om".... It is to be chanted very slowly in a monotone manner. There is a cute story that involves chanting.
A man cam to a Guru asking him for a chant so he might become awakened. The guru replied recite this saying "Om Mani Padme Om", the man was ever so thankful and went away. A few years later the man comes back to the guru and says "I have recited the chant you gave me, and indeed I have awakened, i have been chanting "Om Mani Padme Cow" since i saw you last, and my mind has cleared and my heart has opened, thank you so much". The guru just smiled and said " Very good, i am glad it worked for you." So it IS beneficial to chant. Best of success to you.
