Tripple Gem Facets: Happiness, Truth and Peace?

edited March 2010 in Buddhism Basics
I have long time held that an aspect of the essence of the Middle Path is, In all things to strive to increase peace, truth and happiness.

Does anyone else here think that:

Happiness might be signified by the Buddha,
Truth by Dharma,
Peace by Sanga?

Salome:)

I always have a problem with truth
    "Truth what is truth?"
"It's true from a certain view point"

I am happy when some say that the Dharma is eternal truth. I believe that. There is no possible world, that I can conceive of, in which dharma is not true at all points: Annica, anataman, dukka.

If that ain't truth, what is?:)

If it cannot be doubted must it be true?

    Hi MatSalted,

Do you think that the Noble Eightfold Path is the "true" path to liberation?

    Hi Guy

This has often puzzled me, this question.

There is a very real problem of suffering, that much we cannot deny. I think most who think about it, Buddhist or not would agree that its cause is the specific delusion and tanha that the Buddha states. And I imagine most would agree that a reduction in one would entail a reduction in the other, even without an understanding of dependent origination and Karma.

So this leaves the Path, Magga, itself. I think it is true that this is a path to liberation. I have experienced this and you can see it must be like this because of the prior dharmic truths. So I would say yes it is a true path to true liberation.

I cannot however see any reason dharmically or otherwise why there couldn't be another path distinct from the Noble eightfold Path, though I cant imagine anything about it, to be honest:)

Dharma -> the unchanging truth or universal principle / law
Buddha -> means the awakening mind / life state , it could refers to the historical Buddha or the Buddha nature in our life
Sangha -> refers to harmonous community who walk the path and prerseve the teaching

you said Buddha = happiness, quite close, but to be specific would be achiving the life state absolute happiness ( as differiate to the relative happiness )
you said Sangha = peace , well as a strech , peace related to harmonious community to preserve the teaching

Dharma usually represented by the Dharma wheel
Buddha usually represented by the Lotus flower
Sangha ususally represented by the Buddha foot print ( for those who walk the path of the Buddha )

at times of Nikayan , the triple gems is represented by 3 identical Buddhas,
while some Mahayana are more elaborated , they used 3 different Buddhas to represent - such as the Medicine Buddha, Shakaymuni Buddha in the center , and the Amida Buddha ; or one Buddha flanked by 2 Bodhisattvas

But all these representation , to the bottom line - they just point to reply on the 3 type of learning towards awakening - ethic, concentration and wisdom

There are already the "outer," "inner," and "esoteric" interpretations of the three jewels in conventional Buddhism. (See this podcast for an explanation [part of this series.])

It seems like shaky ground though, to devise one's own translations of venerable nomenclatures, without at least backing those translations up with some kind of practical, historical or linguistic justification. (If you want to rewrite the dictionary, you should have a good reason.)

true peace is like the ocean... you put a little agitation into it and it is still peace..

true happiness... lasts a long time even when its gone... its always there you just need to link into it..

true truth... cuts through the confusion.... even the confusion when you see that it is confusion it is cut.

Peace happiness and truth happen all together.
