Cultivating Nobility

edited April 2010 in Philosophy
In Buddhism, we hear the words noble and nobility a lot: the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, etc.

I love the fact that nobility is such a central pillar of this philosophy: somehow that really elevates the path in my mind. Nobility has always seemed a very high ideal to me, a "lofty" virtue in the upper realms of human consciousness.

What is your understanding of nobility? What does nobility mean to you?

Do you "practice" or "cultivate" nobility in your life? If so, how do you do it?

What does it mean to cultivate nobility?

The word "ariya" has different roots & explanations.

I have heard it means "to be without enemies".

    The enemy, naturally, is dukkha.

    :)
    1. <HI>Ari </HI>: (page 77)
    = VvA 105, 6 = PvA 7; DhA iv.228; DhsA 349.
Arāti Arāti [a + rāti, cp. Sk. arāti] an enemy Dāvs iv.1.
Ari Ari [Ved. ari; fr. ṛ</B>] an enemy. -- The word is used in exegesis & word expln, thus in etym. of arahant (see ref. under arahant v.); of bhūri Ps ii.197. -- Otherwise in late language only, e. g. Sdhp 493 (˚bhūta).

Thank you for this input, Dhamma Dhatu. I didn't realize "to be without enemies" was one of the definitions of "noble." That's very interesting, and I will meditate on that.

What does noble mean to you?

To me, it means 'supreme'; providing the highest & unsurpassed benefit.

Such as the Hindu term 'raja yoga', which means "king of yoga", the "supreme yoga".
Ariyan was used in the meaning of king. Arai+ar

    The Ariyan Question

Nobility in Buddhism to me means the intention, re-asserted continuously, to remain true to the goal of liberation for yourself and for others. It is an inner spiritual dedication that marks a human that has given up worldly aspirations. This might not be the perfect way to describe it, or how others describe it, but words start to lose their grounding after a time.

I hear that Gautama Buddha was a fully enlightened being, in other words human par excellence, a fully developed human being.

I have sometimes come across teachers using the word "ennobling" instead of "noble" in explaining the Four Noble Truths - meaning the raising the status of our character and ideals in the Buddhist context rather than raising our "social" status. I think the words "supreme" (Dhamma Dhatu) and "par excellence" (Floating_Abu) are very apt. :)

    Zendo,

Z: What is your understanding of nobility? What does nobility mean to you?

S9: I have heard nobility described as kingly. If this were the case, than practicing nobility would certainly be deciding who to put on charge, either of your life or in your acts within that life.

In this context, you would also have to decide who were the servants.

In my life, I have decided, for instance, that my emotions should not BE in charge. But that my emotions should definitely be listened to, and considered into the equation of both what is to be understood and what is to be done, because they are both a necessary and worthy servants, or advisors.

For instance, intellect without heart is a sterile thing. : ^ (

None of our advisors can act autonomously and still remain wise.

Other worthy advisors would certainly be our physical feelings, which keep us in touch with our physical being and its health.

Nobility brings up the whole idea of a hierarchy, with the King being in charge of his kingdom (metaphorically speaking.)

So perhaps our biggest, or is it our first decision, would be; who are we going to make King (in this story), and why?

    Respectfully, : ^ )

Thank you all for your input on this.

My own understanding of "nobility" is similar to the definition given by sukhita: a raising of our character and ideals. It is a lifting up of our thoughts and feelings, a raising of our consciousness to a level where compassion, lovingkindness, and a genuine concern for other beings are our governing motives.

The old European "caste" sytem of nobility--where a man was a "noble," not because he had high character, but merely because he had money, power, and social status--seems to me a perversion of true nobility. True nobility (as I understand it) has always been marked by a kind heart, wisdom, compassion, and a strong character.

How can we cultivate nobility? What are some ways that one can embody and practice this quintessential Buddhist ideal?

Yes, and to add a dash from jinzang's diaries:
Here's a quote from the Ratnakuta Sutra that I stumbled upon Friday that I thought was relevant to this part of the Heart Sutra. It's taken from "A Garland of Jewels," translated by Yeshe Gyamtso.
The elder Subhuti asked those bhikshus, "Venerable ones, what have you attained and realized that you now adorn the youthful Manjushri with your shawls?"

They replied, "Noble Subhuti, we have attained and realized nothing. That is why we adorn Manjushri with our shawls. Noble Subhuti, when we had the idea of attainment we arose and left this assembly. When we no longer had the idea of attainment, we returned. Attainment is deception and vanity. Attainment and realization do not exist."

Subhuti asked them, "Who tamed you?"

They replied, "We were tamed by the absence of attainment, origination, distraction, and even placement."

Having some attainment is the jackal's yelp, having no attainment is the lion's roar

I believe you are correct, sir! :)

I wonder, though, if there's anything more specific than that? Perhaps a particular spoke of the Path that lends itself more toward the strengthening of nobility.

Perhaps not, though: this may be the best counsel.
