Question About Monastic Details

edited April 2010 in Buddhism Basics
I was just wondering, but I read in a text somewhere that some monks do not eat solid food past noon, as part of their regular daily regimen (they drink juice or other things after that point only). My question is, in this day and age, would a meal suppliment shake count as solid food, since its more nourishing than most liquids? Or would that be a way to sort of skirt the rule?

Not asking for a particular reason...I was just thinking about it while reading.

Well, we're talking about monks here. Monks that live on alms. How do meal supplement shakes enter into the equation? ;)

    Hi Ren

It is not necessary for a monk to eat after 12:00 noon.

A monk is generally spending their day meditating & studying.

If a monk has developed samadhi concentration, one meal per day is enough (although many monks eat two meals or one & a half meals per day).

    Kind regards

it was just a throw away question about technicalities. I just wanted to know if that was technicaly a loophole.

    Hi Ren

Loopholes are limited. Under the rules, it would probably be regarded as food.

    Kind regards

    :)
