Anyone know this Zen story?
Hi all,
I'm trying to remember or better still find a reference to a Zen story someone once told me. If anyone knows it and/or its source I would be grateful.
The basics of the story from memory goes as follows:
A Zen Master lived just outside a village and was well respected. A girl lived in the village and over time it became obvious that she was pregnant. The girl said it was the Zen Master who was the father. Being patriarchal times, the girl was banished from the village. The Zen Master was no longer regarded in any esteem.
The girl had nowhere to live. The Zen Master saw her in the street and took her in to his home and looked after her.
Later the girl delivered a healthy baby and she and the child stayed on with the Zen Master who continued to take care of them until the infant was a toddler. Eventually the girl called a public meeting and told everyone that she had lied and that the Zen Master was not the father of the child.
She and the child then moved out to another village.
The Zen Master neither confirmed nor denied any story. He just continued to live and practice in his house.
Thanks,
Bagg
