intent

edited April 2010 in Buddhism Basics
I think intent is the most important thing. I will continue to find that I fear things, yearn for things, or regret things. But these feelings are not THAT bad, and if I just keep my intent pure and let go, then I can be satisfied in the face of these emotions. I'm not completely sober but I still think this is valuable and I wanted to share.

I just rephrased this into a fb status as "being satisfied with having pure intent is liberating"

What makes you know when it is pure vs impure? How is it different

"pure" intent or "good kamma" - the same as impure intent/bad kamma really. Buddhism aims to go beyond kamma.

Good for you, Questionful. That's a great start.

So, you mean that you are satisfied with the fact that you are trying to be a better person? That's good! There's no point in being unhappy about what you are if you are working on a solution. It would be unpleasant to realise that you were so flawed that you wouldn't even attempt to improve yourself...

pure would mean, in accordance with the truth. while it might seem like chasing fame and praise is good, it's actually not. a pure intent is one that is purely good. attaching to a certain thing cannot be pure. i remember a while back some guy here posted a thread asking something like "if i help an old lady cross the street so that people will think highly of me, is it still good karma?" and of course the answer is, yes, it is good karma to help her, but your intent produces bad karma. so intent is not the desire to do a certain action, intent is the desire to cause a certain effect. the desired effect is liberation i guess, because everything goes through the cycle of birth and death (impurity) except pari nibanna right?
