Who is this Buddha ? ?

edited April 2010 in Buddhism Basics
Hello cyber buddhists! I haven't been on here for a while but i've got a question that has been puzzling me of late. Last week in my city there was a sort of travelling........... I don't know what you'd call it......... It was basically people selling trinkets, incense, and a whole gamut of religious/spiritual wares. The thing that puzzeled me is this; I know who i recognise as Buddha from the small statues and teachings (Siddhartha Gautama) But just who exactly is the jolly little fat fellow, with the stretched ears? You know the guy, the one who people say you got to rub his tummy for luck (??)
Forgive my ignorance if this is also indeed Siddhartha Gautama but i can't see any resemblance. Thanx

Hotei is the fat guy, he lived in China in the 11th century.
    You are the Buddha.

Kind of off topic question. I had always thought Hotei was more of a metaphoric character used in stories.

Is he supposed to have actually existed?
