Where Does Self-Love Stop and Narcissism Take Over?

Buddhism teaches compassion as a means to self acceptance. Does a narcissist have too much compassion for ones self?

The distinction between the selfish and the selfless, is made by the degree of consideration for others that goes into their intentions.

A wise and very strategically self-concerned person is selfless.

The foolish self-concerned person is selfish.

No self is true self. True self is the whole of existence. If you love everything, thats not narcissism.

Narcissism harms the self and others. So it is not really love. It is an example of distorted thinking. To be examined.

Narcissism isn't always selfish, its just a strong self-centric desire. The main roots in unhealthy narcissism have been observed to be the inability to process shame correctly, which causes a lack of positive self image, distorted thinking and whatnot. A Narcissist is in constant need of 'self-image food'. Basically a hungry ghost.

If you actually have compassion for yourself, its not isolating... because true compassion seems to require a resonance with nature, which cannot be self serving. You serve yourself as part of nature, not as something above it.

    With warmth,

    Matt
