Buddha in the Background of Akon video - Banned from Sri Lanka

edited May 2010 in Buddhism Basics
http://gawker.com/5501771/akon-banned-from-sri-lanka-after-insulting-buddha

"Violent protests erupted in Sri Lanka after troublemaking singer Akon appeared in a music video, Sexy Chick, which depicts a sexy pool party with a brief Buddha cameo. Now he's been denied a visa. He apologized to Buddhists in Sri Lanka, saying " am a spiritual man, so I can understand why they are offended. But violence is never the answer and I am disheartened to hear about what happened in Sri Lanka."

Music Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9hazmsUxrM

What do you think of this? I find the reaction of the Sri Lankans inappropriate. Apparently they threw rocks at the broadcasting building in Sri Lanka, injured four workers, and busted windows. Personally, I don't see the problem. A Buddha statue was in the background while people were dancing and having a good time. That's not disrespectful at all. Isn't there a saying, "If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him."?

Edit: Btw, it wasn't Akon's song, his music video, nor did he direct it. He was just featured in the song. The song is by David Guetta. So really, it's absurd that Akon is even involved in this.

I think it reveals some intense attachment in the minds of those involved. I don't know about inappropriate... social norms are too slippery.

I think their reaction is unfortunate and adharmic.
You cant offend the Buddha or Buddhism. The video is offensive, but its offensive in its objectification of women and depiction of men as having no responsibility to the women they have relationships with.

As a sidebar, has anyone actually listened to the unedited version of this song. It's hilarious.

Akon, " I'm trying to find the words to describe this girl without being disrespectful."

Chorus, " Damn, yous a sexy bitch, a sexy bitch."

    :D:lol::cool:

Strong words my friend. Well said.

    Uh, I disagree here.

    Lyrics:
    "Oh shes a Shiva
    ...
I'm tryna find the words to describe this girl without being disrespectful"

"In the Shaiva tradition of Hinduism, Shiva is seen as the Supreme God." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shiva

Also, the video just showed women dancing by a pool. I don't see how you got the idea that the men had no responsibility to the women they have relationships with. What if they were single? Plus, according to Eastern philosopher, OSHO, it is natural to be polygamous.

I dont think Osho was a philosopher.
You must have missed the "she's a sexy bitch" part of the chorus.
And "she's a Shiva" is just stupid actually. Shiva is definitely male. Mnt. Kailash is his lingam (according to certain Shaivites) or in laymans terms its his wiener.

Words are essentially meaningless until we give them meaning. The intent behind these words are positive. You also missed the part where they referred to women as both a "Sheva" Hindu Supreme God, and "Diva" which means "female deity."

Why do you think I read a New Age book? I never read one, but I was very New Age at one point. I don't see how Osho is in any way related to New Age. He's an atheist existentialist (admittedly).

Because your response is very new age and inaccurate.
Osho was a new age cult leader.

Which part exactly? This? "Words are essentially meaningless until we give them meaning. The intent behind these words are positive."

This is true. Not in all cases because we ought to respect dictionary definitions, however, in this context, it's about the intent behind the words. The men in the video are referring to these women as godly, and trying to find words to describe them without being disrespectful. That's the intent. They used the words "sexy bitch" as a compliment, albeit a poor choice of words.
Osho was a new age cult leader.

Laughable assertion. One of his primary influences is Buddha and Zen. He is a self-proclaimed existentialist and denies God. All things that are contrary to New Age.

    Wow.
You can think what you want. But your attempted rebuttals of my statements about Shiva are ridiculous and if you really think Osho was anything but a new age cult leader thats your unfortunate business. He may have said he was influenced by Buddha but his actions speak loudly in the contrary.
That man was a criminal and his "teachings" are laughable.

"If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him."?
This is Buddha's compassion on His attainment towards practitioner that there will be many very refining reflections in the course of deep meditation, and are to be ignored as well.

I hate to nitpick but you have misunderstood the lyric. It's not "Shiva" it's "Diva"

    http://www.directlyrics.com/akon-sexy-bitch-lyrics.html

    Definition of Diva:

Or this, but I don't think this is what they meant

I was honestly expecting to see a Buddha looking man dancing in the video.

I was severely disappointed when i clicked the link and saw the little image in the background. Haha.

Anyway, at least hes trying to find the words to describe a girl without being disrespectfuuuuuuuuuuuull!

The word Diva is even more appropriate which means female deity.

But, I played that part on repeat to hear the exact word, and he says "Shiva" without a doubt.

Perhaps you are right. That's not something I'm concerned with. My point was that calling a woman a Shiva is an honorary compliment. Though, even this point doesn't concern me much because I don't care too much for Akon myself. However, I enjoy the song.
and if you really think Osho was anything but a new age cult leader thats your unfortunate business.

Not one of his teachings was in line with New Age. Show me one thing he said or did that indicates that he is New Age. I have already shown you several things that he has said that point to the contrary and are in fact contradictory to New Age thought.
He may have said he was influenced by Buddha but his actions speak loudly in the contrary.

He wrote an entire book about Buddha's life and his teachings.
    That man was a criminal

    No evidence.
    and his "teachings" are laughable.

I'm sorry you feel that way.

I listened closely and it still sounds like Diva. Any soft "sh" sound you're hearing is probably from the vocorder / autotune. "Diva" a very common word used in the context (of the song/video), whereas "Shiva" isn't.

Leaving aside which words he is saying and the off-topic stuff about Osho (Osho? What's that fraudster doing here?), are we saying that Sri Lankans do not have the right to ban a video when there are those here who are OK with other bannings? Or doesn't it apply to 'foreigners'?

This is so crazy. How very not Buddha-like. I am surprised this even happened. But then again, some Buddhists don't act any different from the average person sometimes, so I shouldn't find this so surprising.

Just taking a look at the contempt some of the threads in this forum bring out between members, should be enough to show me that even Buddhists ARE human after all. And that means they are just as flawed as the rest of us.

The context of the video indicates that it has an Eastern theme. I believe it was filmed at Big Buddha Beach in Ko Sumai.

Shiva or Diva would make sense in this context. "Diva" more likely refers to "female deity" rather than "female singer/performer."

There may be contempt in the Buddhist forums, but contempt =/= violence. I doubt anyone here would react violently. I hold a lot of contempt towards different things, but I also hold contempt towards violence.

Maybe "contempt" is too harsh a word, but we all know it's not all roses and teddy bears around here (or any other internet forum for that matter). I don't have particular examples, but if you read the forums for a while (including older posts), you're bound to find what I'm talking about.

Edit: and I'm aware I'm more than welcome to leave if I don't like it here, so no need to say that either, cause I DO like it here, but sometimes it's funny to see how the very people who are supposed to be working towards having their egos in check (practitioners or students of Buddhism), get in endless arguments about who's right and who isn't.
