A question about "active" members

I am just wondering how the system defines an active member? I see every day that we are gaining more and more new members but it seems that the number of "active" members is decreasing... Does it consider someone as inactive if they have not logged in for some time or if they have not posted?

Just curious...

    I believe it's someone who's logged in during the last 60 days.

    It fluctuates pretty wildly; I wouldn't pay it much attention. :)
