Commitment Ceremony??

edited May 2010 in Buddhism Basics
Ok, so I know there are a lot of these on here but here's my life story:

Basically I was raised baptist and many Christian beliefs and morals I totally agree with. Many I don't. The point is I've never felt a strong connection or pride in my religion.

When I started reading about Buddhism I felt and excitement I had never felt before. I have never felt excited about spirituality or my soul, or any kind of religious practicing or really anything that has to do with religion. I never cared and I never really felt connected or comfortable with my religion or religion as a whole.

So obviously I have decided to take on a Buddhist lifestyle and I have managed to find a temple nearby. Now I don't know what they offer as far as any kind of ceremony to symbolize my taking on the Buddhist religion as my own but as long as I can remember I have always been the type of person to practice alone. I will probably try to have a ceremony with the temple but I was also wondering if it was possible for me to preform some sort of ceremony or ritual alone to symbolize my new commitment to this lifestyle?
Even if it's not official does anyone have any ideas?

I don't know if there are any ceremonies offered at the temple, but you can ask. I would hope the temple has classes you can take that will teach you both how to meditate, and how to practice when you are off the meditation cushion.

How to symbolize your new commitment? Set up a small altar to do your practice at every day.

I suggest you ask whoever runs the temple about the Refuge ceremony.
