Significance of River

edited May 2010 in Buddhism Basics
I reciently had a dream where I awoke with a clear image heavy in my mind that read "river choices". It was such an intense image that I'm sure it must have some sort of meaning to it. Anyone have any insight as to what this might signify? Thank you!!

What do you think it means?

    Hi Sarah,

I am not going to interpret your dream for you, but maybe this information will be of use to you. According to certain texts in the Pali Canon (collection of Buddhist texts) there are six types of dreams. Three of them are biologically caused. One of them is based upon past events, most often these are made up of things we did that day and they are our brains way of digesting new information. Another type of dream is of the paranormal variety, this can be some kind of communication with another being in some other realm (perhaps a ghost or a heavenly being, etc). The last type are prophetic dreams, these can give us an indication of what will happen in the future.

This last category is very rare indeed, if what you had is a prophetic dream (and I don't want to encourage you one way or the other to believe that it is or it isn't) then it could be very important. If it is one of the latter type of dreams, you are probably the best person to discover what this dream signifies since our minds tend to speak in a symbolic language that is unique to each one of us. The language of dreams is often a combination of symbols, emotions and personal experiences so it is hard enough for the person who is having the dreams to interpret them, let alone someone else.

So to summarise: You are the best person to interpret dreams. But even so it can be a bit hit and miss sometimes so it might be best, if you are uncertain, not to try to make the dream fit into some preconceived idea of what you think it should mean. Many of our dreams may infact be totally meaningless.

    Sarah,

When looking at dreams, there is usually a deep connection between yourself and the symbols that are present. "River choices" would be best looked at from what both of those words mean to you. Looking in a dream dictionary or other such things will usually just dilute the meaning.

    With warmth,

    Matt
