Buddhist Art?

edited June 2010 in Arts & Writings
I was just wondering what qualifies Buddhist art as such. Is it the artist, the symbols employed, or something else? Thanks!

Thanks for clearing that up, Pietro!

However, I do agree with him. Trying to classify art into pigeonholes never seems to work, does it? I think if someone calls it Buddhist art, then it's Buddhist art. In one way of looking at it, everything is Buddhist art. Or you could be a purist and say it's only traditional depictions of Buddhist icons, like the Buddha or Tibetan Buddhist deities. Both are equally correct, imho.

I think the intention of the artist is all something needs to qualify, though perhaps certain subjects, materials and their respective contexts might swing it.

I think it boils down to the old 'what is art?' chestnut.
