Purpose of symbols

I was in a Buddhist temple and noticed that there were symbols e-v-e-r-y-w-h-e-r-e (dharma wheel, lotus flowers, dragons)... What's the purpose of weaving symbols into seemingly every possible nook and cranny?

    Some feel it might keep the mind from being distracted away from mindfulness. Some might consider it pretty. How did seeing all of those symbols impact you?

    Hi, Danny -

    A good bit of it is cultural - i.e. using a culture's aesthetic in decorating one's temple in that culture. That is why you find some temples are very ornate, and some are very spartan or spare.
