Question about buddhism?

edited July 2010 in Buddhism Basics
Hey guys,

I recently was reading a book on meditation and it talked about Buddhism and I became more and more interested....

So I have a few questions...

Can some give me the big ideas of buddhism, just the overall picture! :)

Thanks!

I'm curious, what did the book say about Buddhism?

So what happens when we die?

Where do our loved ones go? Will we ever connect back with them?

I'm sorry, but I don't think anyone can really answer that. We can only provide our own interpretations of teachings and our own beliefs.

mike, perhaps it would be easier for us to address your curiosity, if you were a little more specific about the main points you're pondering.
It's rather like me saying to you -

"So, tell me about Science! you know, the big ideas and the overall picture...."

    It's really not that easy.

Also, remember that in being more specific, you will get a far more personal, 'human' input - but such responses will vary - from the mildly to the extreme.

But at least you will have personal input, which might make your head clearer.

Here is a story about a Jewish Rabi. I think its suitable for Buddhism too.

A pagan came to a Rabi one day, and told him that he would convert himself, if the Rabi could recite the entire Torah while standing on one leg.
The Rabi stood up on one leg and said: "That which is harmful to you, don't do to others. This is the Torah, the rest is commentary - Go and study it"

"That which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow. That is the whole Torah, the rest is the explanation; go and learn." --Rabbi Hillel

According to Buddhist beliefs we are already connected to all life that is, was or ever will be. As in physics, nothing can be destroyed or created, just changed.

Buddhism says you aren't happy because of your afflictive emotions: greed, anger, envy, and pride. These have a single root: the idea that you have a separate, independent self that is subject to benefit or harm. By not indulging afflictive emotions, cultivating positive emotions, the opposite of the afflictive ones, and practicing meditation we can cut the root of our afflictive emotions and live happily and at peace with ourselves and others.

With the practice of Buddhism, you will stop wanting to ask those questions. You will view your "need to know" differently. And you will understand that conjecture is only that and nothing more.

True, I actually like the "the rest is commentary" translation better
