The Bodhi Tree

edited July 2010 in Buddhism Basics
Hey everybody, I'm new here and I just want to ask a strange question:
If you are aware of the bodhi tree in which Siddartha Buddha was enlightened under, and therefore the fact that it still lives, I was just wondering if it was possible to purchase or attain seeds to plant from the actual tree itself. (I just thought it would be interesting to grow an offspring of a holy tree) Thank you!

Maybe. The current tree is actually a sapling that is two generations removed I believe.

No, the original tree is gone. (2500 years would be a long time for a tree to live!) The tree at Bodhgaya is a descendant of the original tree. Importing live seeds or saplings from another country is usually difficult, for reasons of pest control.

    I beg to differ....!

The Oldest Trees in the world are:

Great Basin Bristlecone Pine - 4844 years old
    Alerce - 3622 years old
Giant Sequoia - 3266 years old
Huon Pine - 2500 years old
Rocky Mountain Bristlecone Pine - 2435 years old.

Notice that these are all conifers.
The very sap a conifer produces is a perfect preservative in itself.
The precious stone, Amber, is pine sap.

    This list is interesting....
