Wondering

edited August 2010 in Buddhism Basics
Hello,
My name is Shane and I live in Ohio. I'm not a member of any church or group, but curious about finding something that seems to share the way I try to live my life. I guess you could say "the golden rule". From the research and the things i've read it would seem that buddhism shares a lot of the same beliefs I already have like (forgive me if I don't interprit things correct) reincarnation, karma, no supreme being.
Any guidance Would be wonderful.
Thanks

    Hello shane and welcome :)

What would you like guidance with exactly? As most religions, buddhism has many many aspects and teachings to it that require practice and research. If you would care to post some questions or areas you are 'gray' in, I am sure people will be willing to help you,
    Tom :)

I would like a book or title on the teachings that I can read to start with, then I'll go from their.
Thanks for a place to start.

    Shane,

Welcome to the forum! I think a great place to start is: Ajahn Chah's Living Dhamma.

There are lots of intricacies, and I'm sure others will come along and offer up fantastic readings on the four noble truths, the eightfold path and the basic precepts and tenets. I don't have great online knowledge of such events, but the link I gave really illumines the main vibration of Buddhism, in my opinion.

    With warmth,

    Matt

Yes I suggest reading about the 4 noble truths and the 8 fold path also, it is a great place to start. Buddhism basically teaches us about suffering in life, where it comes from and how to over come it. The 4 noble truths will explain that to you, so maybe read about that for a while.
Compassion to living beings and yourself is a major part of buddhism, something we can all practice in every day life.
You have mentioned karma, or (kamma). That is always a misconception to people who do not fully understand the concept, many people know of karma but do not know what it means properly.

But yes, delve into reading and also take this link as there are many talks on buddhism teachings. Lok down the right and there are plenty. A lot of buddhism is logic, simple teachings that are right there in front of you but never realise.
