What is important to you?

Ive been reading this book

http://www.amazon.com/Cultivating-Buddhist-Heart-Fulfillment-Changing/dp/433302322X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1281549445&sr=8-1

on compassion, the Lotus Sutra, etc.... and I just have a question to the more seasoned people here. Is compassion towards all living things important to your belief of Buddhism? If it is just a side note per se, what is most important to you? I found this book to be very good and it made me feel like theres something I can do, smile..and be nice! I have read alot of threads here about things other than this, although compassion is touched on. What can we all do to make life better for someone else? Nichiko Niwano said (to paraphrase) how we greet people is important, our family,friends,neighbors..etc.. saying good morning with a genuine spirit of care and compassion. :)
