Book advice

edited August 2010 in Buddhism Basics
Hi everyone,

This is my first visit today to this site and have found it very insperational.

Can anyone give me some advice on a first book to read to help me on my quest to find myself.
I am a complete beginner . Other than I read a book many years ago called " The Journey Of Self Discovery" His Divine Grace A.C.BHAKTIVEDANTA SWAMI PRABHUPADA. which I have just dug out.
Any feed back much appreciated.

I guess that depends on what you want to read about. Basics of Buddhism? Meditation? Theravada? Mahayana? Zen? There's lots of different things you could study.

The Recommended Reading thread is a good one to check out. I know there's like six pages to wade through, but it'll give you a good overview of some basic topics.

Mindfulness in Plain English is good. So is Wake Up To Your Life (by my teacher.) The first book has the advantage of being free over the internet.

"The Heart of the Buddha's Teaching" and "The Miracle of Mindfulness"by Thich Nhat Hanh offer a good introduction to Buddhism and meditation practice. I also second fivebells's recommendation of "Mindfulness in Plain English."

I third it. It's free on the internet, but a hardcopy can be more practical and useful for some. Either way.

For an overview of 'what is Buddhism' with no nonsense, I recommend the same author. The title is '8 Mindful Steps to Happiness'. Very plain language, very hard hitting and it covers the core of the Buddha's teaching.

I have this as both an actual book and as an ebook. I am re-reading this as well as several texts from Buddhanet and the Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archives. I got a nook for my anniversary and it does a great job for reading pdf files. I just finished "The Tree of Enlightenment" and learned a lot from this ebook (its on Buddhanet). My very first book was "Awakening the Buddha Within" by Lama Surya Das. Seems to be from a more Westerner point of view and an almost conversational tone. I do not know what others here think of his work but I have enjoyed his books.
