My new stained glass piece

MountainsMountains Veteran
edited August 2010 in General Banter
Inspired by a similar piece made by a Buddhist nun that I saw on a blog, I commissioned a local glass artisan to make me a Namkhyen Gyaldar flag for my kitchen window. I drew it up and she took it from there. She did a magnificent job I think, and I'm very pleased with how it looks. It's approximately 24" wide. The window it's in gets direct morning sun, so it really shines when I'm having breakfast. I love the way she incorporated flowing lines into the joints between the pieces of glass.

:)

WOW!!! That is so beautiful. Is the design also known as the karmapa dream flag?

Thanks! Yup. That's what it is (see my avatar). Something about that design spoke to me the first time I ever saw it.

    Copied and pasted:

Namkhyen Gyaldar - The Dream Flag of His Holiness the 16th Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje

'Namkyen Gyaldar' means the 'Victorious Flag of Buddha's Wisdom'. It is the manifestation of the supreme Enlightened vision of HH 16th Karmapa. HH prophesised that this flag will bring immense benefits to the Dharma as well as all sentient beings.

The sky blue colour represents the complete and profound Wisdom of the inner realisation of the Buddha. The yellow colour on the flag represents the complete Wisdom of limitless Compassion which bestows benefits on all sentient beings and phenomena. The wavy line and the joining of the yellow and blue colours signify the inseperability of these two Wisdoms.

That is quite an art form to be able to do, something that has not been lost through the ages. It does look great though, upside down or right way up :P

The woman who did it for me is extremely talented. Her clientele includes Barry Manilow, Reba McEntire, and numerous other "famous" people. And she's right here in little old Salem, Virginia. Who'd have known?

you live in salem? Is that the same salem which is related to the witch trials..? I do not know much about that but it is notorious :P The woman must be very talented then and highly recognized, also must have a pretty penny lol. Is that where you are hanging it permanently or do you have somewhere else for it to live...

Salem, Virginia. Not nearly as famous as the other Salem I'm afraid. Home of.... uh... hmmm... I can't really think of anything that Salem, Virginia is famous for, come to think of it :)

PS: The photo shows it in its current home - my kitchen/dining area window. It's visible from the kitchen and the living room, and it gets morning light on a southern exposure, so it really shines.
