How to be a positive influence?

So I lived in a *very* sketchy neighborhood in Cincinnati this past summer. I tried my best to greet people with warm, honest smiles and a hello. On my last day, I was walking home from groceries and a young boy (15-16 years old) asked if I wanted a nickel bag (pot) right outside of a police station.

As much progress as I have seen with myself and others have seen in me, it is frustrating to see the cycle of bad decisions be transferred to the younger generation (almost a literal sense of karma/rebirth if you will). I know I can't save the world myself, but what do you guys do in similar frustration? Any wisdom?

P.s. I have nothing against pot in moderation, simply that this boy is on a path to cause much suffering.
