New To Meditation

edited September 2010 in Buddhism Basics
Hi, My name is Osho Thomas Cooper. I am an ordained member of the Blue Mountain Lotus Society in Harrisburg, PA. I am putting together an information product about meditation. It will be an ebook designed to help people learn to meditate, and to discover some different types of meditation available. The book is almost complete, but I need your help. I would like to know what your questions about meditation are. It can be anything at all, no matter how silly you may think it is. Your contribution will really help people who are wanting to start a meditation practice. For helping me out with this, I will give you a copy of the book when it's done. I appreciate your help, and all of your contributions to this great forum. Click Here to send your question.

I believe Buddhist monks don't waste time with their meditations. My question is what and why are they practicing?

I think that would be a decent question.

Hi Osho, wow it sounds like your book will be of great help to those, like myself that are new to meditation.
I have a question I would like to ask, if I may?
As I am a beginner and have only just really mastered the focus on the breath meditation, what is the next step?

I see you didn't submit your question via the link, so I'll try to answer it here. I'm not quite sure what you mean by monks not wasting time with their meditations. It's important to remember that monks are merely humans, no different than you or me, and are subject to the same pitfalls and triumphs regarding meditation as we all experience. As to why anyone practices, I can't answer that because I believe the answer is personal to that person and to what their beliefs in spirituality are. What their practice is technique wise will usually depend on the tradition that they are involved in. Hope that was helpful.
