The nature of compassion

edited September 2010 in Buddhism Basics
Compassion is not a weakness. It is safe and powerful. Compassion is not pity, it is an advanced form of love. Pity is the same as taking a superior stand. You cannot hurt anyone with compassion, but you can hurt someone out of love. Compassion always brings positive results, by thought, word or deed. Compassion is difficult. It´s not an emotion, it´s a state of heart and mind that makes peace, real peace and strength. If you have compassion, you cannot go wrong in this world. If you can show compassion, the healthier you will be.

Compassion is an essential virtue in all faiths. Jesus talks, Mohammed too and Buddha about it. It is needed to know Heaven/Paradise/Nirvana. The moment you experience compassion in yourself, you will know what it is and know that it is beneficial for your (and the others´) well-being. Morals (right and wrong) are relative, ethics (good and evil) are universal. Compassion is always ethical, it even transcends good and evil.

Providing the Intention is from a base-point of Wisdom, and not idiocy, it's fine.

    Wise Compassion is skilful.
    Idiot compassion is not.

I think compassion may boil down to the ability to see suffering. When we can observe suffering in others and ourselves, and we can understand the origin of that suffering. Anger, envy and hatred dissipate and we are left only with the desire to end that suffering.
It differs from pity in that pity comes from the belief that we are better off than others, which is ultimately illusory.

    Thanks!

Fede: Maybe compassion have no intention? Just a positive outcome whatever the compassionate act is. I believe the wisdom will come automatically when the act is out of compassion. "Idiot-compassion" is just not possible!

    Chrysalid: I agree.

If you see a homeless person asking for money and you give him money is that compassionate? I would say so. If the homeless person you give money to smells of alcohol and vomit is giving that person money wise? Would compassion in this case not benefit from wisdom? Perhaps use your money to buy the man some food and give him the food instead of something easy to convert to alcohol?
