why i'm confident in buddhism

edited September 2010 in Buddhism Basics
I've always had this deep interest in buddhism. Recently I know my views have been much more in line with that of buddhism, but i've developed a fear of labels and i've been very hesitant on studying buddhism enough to decide whether it was for me or not, on the fear that it might be and I might have to give myself a label.

Anyways, over the last few days I have been studying the buddha's teachings quite a lot and i've been absolutely astounded. Not only did it make sense, but often the thought process which the buddha was supposed to have had is the same thought process that I have been having myself! It's like we're all on this journey, and because i'm at a certain stage in my journey i'm able to relate to the thoughts that entered the buddha's mind prior to his enlightenment. But yea, the fact that my mind had already confirmed many of the teachings of buddhism prior to me studying buddhism extensively serves as a pretty good proof that buddhism consists of the true teachings of a man who achieved enlightenment.(I won't say things like "is the right religion" since there is no right or wrong. There are just different stages on different paths)

Hi TheJourney, Welcome to the Forum!

Labels are just labels. Labels are useful because they give you an idea of what to expect. Imagine if you went to the supermarket and nothing had a label on it, it all just came in plain unlabelled boxes. It'd be a total guessing game as to what you are going to be eating for dinner.

The experience of actually eating the food itself is much closer to the truth than reading the label that came with the food. Labels are never going to tell you 100% what something is, but they are a good starting point. So use them but be aware of their limitations.

I hope this site is useful for you, but be aware of its limitations. :)

P.S. Labels such as "right" and "wrong" are useful. ;)
