cosmic contractions-expansions ???

In a lot of suttas i notice the sentence "many eons of cosmic contraction, many eons of cosmic expansion, many eons of cosmic contraction & expansion".
supposing this was probably one ultra very commented topic in buddhist forums,
because sounds like big-bang,and im not into cosmology, but until now i never seeing it mention. So i ask....what do you think about it??

it has other meaning?, in that time that words mean something different?
what the modern world says?

Thanks!.

That was the world view in the Buddha's time. World views change. It has no bearing on practice.

Some apparent parallels between quantum cosmology and Buddhist cosmology have been found. Among these is The Universe in a Single Atom by HHDL. Another is the NOVA series The Elegant Universe with Patrick Greene, in which the parallel with Buddhist cosmology is not overt, but it can be seen. The graphic depiction of quantum reductionism is really beautiful, and could just as easily be taken as a good graphic for Buddhist reductionism. It definitely floated my boat.

So it's cool to think about, but as Richard says, it adds nothing to practice. Richard is concise like that and I have a lot of respect for that. :)
