Differences between Ch'an and Zen?

I am wondering if there's any difference between the practice of Ch'an ("Chinese Zen") and Zen (Soto or Rinzai) Buddhism?

The only practical differences I've noticed are that (at least around here) many Ch'an centres/temples/what have you also couple their practice with Pure Land, whereas the Japanese Zen schools don't really seem to do the same with Shin.

HM I DUNNO but zen obviously grew out of chan, & the rinzai school is the japanese equivalent of the lijing or something school in china, and soto grew out of caodong. zen is more popular than chan outside of china , but they are roughly the same type of buddhism as far as i know.
