what is Zen Buddhism

hi daft question probably but i have been looking into groups near me and have found a group close by that say they are a Zen meditation group?
i have heard of Theravada and Mahayana. the group says they are a Chan group?

    Zen Buddhism is a type of Mahayana buddhism. Chan buddhism is what it was called in china. Then it went to Japan and they called it Zen.
