Hi there Zen friends.
What is the idea behind getting whacked with that big stick?
Not sure if I could meditate knowing that some bloke was going to come round and give me a big whack from time to time.
But seriously what is the stick for?
Looking forwards to your replies as I really do wish to know more about the other schools of buddhism out there, what their practices are and of course what brought you to this particular path.
With metta:)

Are you angry with the stick or the person holding the stick?

Who or what is being struck by the stick?

Where I practice, they don't whack you with the stick unless you ask for it. It's purpose is to wake you up if you find yourself getting sleepy. Mostly used on retreats where people are sitting for long periods. A good whack with a stick is pretty good at waking you up. It's also almost like a back massage, kinda. Sitting for long periods, if your back muscles start aching, a good whack with the stick feels good on those muscles.

It's been called the 'Stick of Friendliness' or something. I think I read that on this forum somewhere.

They also used sticks back in the ol' days too, to shock monks whom asked too many questions out of thinking about the unthinkable nature of it.

You're asking to get whacked...I don't mean in the hitman way...I mean in the "stick of friendliness" way.

    Consider yourself whacked.

    In a 'friendly' way.
