sleeping

edited October 2010 in Buddhism Basics
I've been getting more and more into buddhism and meditation recently, and when I wake up in the middle of the night(which is quite often) I have this unbelievable feeling of understanding. It makes me feel incredible. I forget what it is that I understand very soon, though. I wrote something down last night, but i'm not sure if it's what I originally understood when I woke up. My dreams have been about trying to gain enlightenment, too. So do you guys think that sleeping/dreaming can be helpful in trying to gain insight?

There's your insight right there...insight into impermanence.

Hey thanks that makes sense. And actually may be the insight i've been having, at least last night. Everything short of nirvana, including all understandings that I think I have about the world around me, are impermanent. I think. ha

In the words of ajahn chah, if you strive to meditate, you will reap little/no fruit. If you strive to reach enlightenment, you will never become an awoken one

good point. A book i'm reading called the paradox of becoming deals with this issue. It truly is a paradox to want to become someone who doesn't want to become. I've been wondering about this for a few days now and I came across this PDF. I'll post the link for those who are interested.

I personally adopt a very simple approach, 'let go'

Just let go of everything and be a naturally kind and unselfish person. (I am not that good at doing this however lol)

Funny, I wake up in the middle of the night with physiology running through my brain (literally). Is it December yet?
