dreams

edited October 2010 in Buddhism Basics
Ever since i've seriously started the path most of my dreams have had something to do with me gaining knowledge or attaining insight or getting something I want. Last night I had a couple absolutely terrifying dreams, where the whole world revolved around me sort of and everyone was amazed by me etc. That may not sound bad, but given the circumstances it's terrifying. Anyways, here's what i'm wondering. Could it be that i'm getting insight into higher births, so that I can see what it's like to have my fantasies fulfilled, and see how unsatisfactory even having my wildest fantasies fulfilled is?

    Nope.

Could be. Or it could be random brain activity.

Random brain activity. That's it. Can be altered and affected by drugs, stress, diet, etc, etc, etc. Just random electrons floating around.

Then again, if that's the lesson you got out of it, then maybe that's what it was. Doesn't sound too reliable to me though. If you can verify it while awake, then you can. If not, not.

True. It's really immaterial what dreams "are". If you can glean something from them, that's great. Just don't attach too much importance to the dream itself, nor to its form, origin, etc. Just take whatever lesson may be there and move on.

I like dreams. They're quite interesting. I like when I'm still half-conscious as I'm going to sleep and I think "damn this shit is trippy".

I once dreamed I was the King of the world. When I was younger I was so taken away by my fancies that I actually believed I was the ONE!!!

I think this is natural actually... when Buddhists get into Tantra you do become the "king". You become the King by not being the King.

A grain of sand is king, becuase he is nothing... and being nothing he is everything. ;)

I have trouble believing I'm special too. But I've been making a lot of progress on that. This was some help.

I also ran into a book about humility written by a nun, with a foreword by the Dalai Lama. Just reading two pages was very helpful. And also some stuff in the Bible has helped me. I am making progress in learning about true humility.

The buddha is said to have been tested by the gods in his quest for enlightenment, so why is it so unbelievable that the supernatural(if you wanna call it that) can be involved in the path? Not just with these dreams but in general.

    Allegory. Myth.

I think for the sake of balance, since the side of skepticism has been well represented already, I will mention that according to the Suttas it is possible that devas were trying to tell you something.

According to the Suttas, although many dreams are caused by biological factors, there are also two other more "supernatural" (for lack of a better word) types of dreams. These can be dreams where a deva has contacted you or dreams about the future.

I am not saying that you have had one of these dreams, but I am not saying you haven't, I have no idea. Maybe you have, maybe you haven't. While it is more probable that it was a biological factor which caused the dream, I think it would be a bit presumptuous to dismiss any other possibilities.

Call me crazy but I actually believe that devas are living beings which we cannot ordinarily see with our human eyes.

However, having said all this, I think the main thing is to learn what you can (if you think there is something to learn) and then just let it go.

dream or real (another kind of dream) everything is momentary
if we try to stick to what has happened we will loose the precious moment at hand too
why bother now about the past and let go of the precious moment of Now
use now to reflect Dhamma we learned is advisable
