About being anxious

edited October 2010 in Buddhism Basics
Just went outside for a bit. Fell into the old familiar pit of living in the past/future by thinking about past/future. Reminded myself that I have only this moment. Then I realized, But I HAVE this moment! No worry about the past/future can steal it from me. I lose it only if I give it away.

    Who fell into this pit?
And you don't have to remind yourself of anything.. When have you ever left this moment that you're trying so hard to grasp it? There's no need to do anything to live in the present..

I wonder about my future too and think about my past too.

I think this is normal right? I mean... our brains are wired like that and has helped us evolve as humans.

It's true that we only have this moment... but speculating about our future is healthy. And thinking about the past and learning from our past mistakes helps us make better decisions.

"Being in the moment" is painful sometimes. It's like a razor-blade. So make some room. Let yourself take some trips down memory-lane or dream about your future. It's totally ok.

That pretty much goes against the grain of any spiritual teaching that I know.

Even the spiritual program of AA says, "If you've got your feet in the past and your head in tomorrow, you'll sh_t on today".

Then there's Eckharte Tolle and the Power of Now; and Buddhist mindfulness which is about being fully present.

And for me, when I visit the future, lots of scary things start happening; I get sick and my house gets repossessed and that things of that ilk.

It will start getting really interesting when you recognize that you dont have "this moment" either.
