REMs before sleep

edited October 2010 in Buddhism Basics
Hello, I'm new to this forum, as in, I just registered. But I've been browsing posts for a while. I've found it to be very helpful.
I'll be posting a lot more later, but for now I've got something I would like some insight on.

In short, I've been practicing meditation for the past couple of years, but I didn't really practice consistently until about two months ago, when I went to a Theravada temple in Thailand. I stayed there for about a month and a half and meditated for a couple of hours each day.

Since I've been meditating a lot more, I will lay down at night and I won't be able to sleep. My teacher at the temple told me to just let go, and not worry. So I just try to relax and focus on the breath going in and out of my nose. But recently I've been experiencing involuntary REM's before I fall asleep. It sort of freaks me out and makes me restless. It's almost as if I have anxiety about it. I don't know why I can't just let it go. When it happens I open my eyes, get up and wait several minutes before trying to sleep again.

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this, and if it can lead to any problems.

I just have this strange looming fear that if I let it happen, I'm just going to dissolve into nothingness. It's hard to explain.. Any insight is appreciated

I guess I don't understand what you mean by REMs. I thought that REM was a stage of sleep

Rapid Eye Movements.. It's like my eyes involuntarily start moving around really fast and focusing at varying strengths, and I start to perceive very subtle flashes of vague forms and light.. but I always stop it

That's weird. Honestly sounds like you'd be best off going to a doctor about it.

    I second that.

REM is indeed a stage of sleep. It goes together with paralysis. If you're able to get up, it's not REM.

However, I do notice my eyes jumping around while I meditate. It mostly happens when I focus, concentrate and try to analyse minor details. So, I just stop trying to analyse, relax and it stops.

One more thing, the positioning of the eyes is related to what you're thinking. Sometimes when people are you something, you have to think about it and when you do, you either stare through a person or your eyes go into one of the corners. Each position is related to one of the senses. If you ask someone what time they set their alarm clock last night, their eyes might jump a couple of times trying to think about what their alarm clock sounds like, what it looks like and what time they set it to. Perhaps you're thinking a lot about what you're experiencing rather than letting the mind settle?

    If all else fails... doctor.
